Scope:The Chapter Outings Program Manager is responsible for the planning and management of the chapter outings program as well as coordination and integration with local group outings. Functions include defining overall trip mix, managing Chapter Outings daily operations, managing program finances, achieving budgeted income and expense goals, coordinating with the Development Director to identify fundraising opportunities, implementing strategies for leader recruitment, training, compliance, stewardship, managing program quality, integrating conservation themes on trips, and coordinating all interactions with leaders and public land agencies. Develops and manages the outdoor activity training program in close coordination with local groups.  Defines training objectives and oversees development of curriculum and materials, delivery of training, and adheres to local and Sierra Club National training requirements.
The Chapter Outings Program Manager works extensively with local group outing leaders and group executive committees.  Works extensively with volunteer trip leaders and committee/subcommittee members. Develops and maintains outside contacts with public land agencies and a variety of outside vendors and service providers including travel insurance companies, food suppliers, travel agencies, concessionaires, and outing suppliers. The Chapter Outings Program Manager will seek to conduct the program in a way that recruits new members, identifies potential leaders, and works with organizing and program staff to integrate new leaders into Sierra Club Florida campaigns.

Job Activities include but are not limited to:

  • Program Planning and Development.  Identifies the mix of trips that best meet organizational financial, program, recruitment, and equity objectives by working with volunteer subcommittees and group leaders.  Manages trip promotion and budget development.  Reviews trip itineraries for potential problems or conflicts with existing policy.
  • Leader Recruitment, Stewardship, & Training.  Implements new leader recruitment activities.  Defines leader training requirements and implements stewardship activities designed to retain qualified leaders. Works with organizing and program staff to identify volunteers who can become leaders for Sierra Club Florida campaigns. Develops a plan to diversify the volunteer base through non-traditional, culture-based trips in coordination with the Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (EIJ) Committee. Plans and develops leader training programs to ensure quality and risk management standards for all trips in an integrated manner with local groups. 
  • Publicity and Marketing.  Coordinates the development of publicity materials, including appearances in the state newsletter, The Pelican,with the Chapter Communications Director.  Coordinates with the Communications Director on contact with the media, and the maintenance of ready-to-use, in-depth media packages.  Develops and implements marketing strategies to increase trip participation for both traditional SCFL membership and non-traditional constituencies.  Evaluates the effectiveness of marketing activities.
  • Operations & Financial Management.  Manages all aspects of the Florida Chapter Outings program. Manages participant and leader complaints to maintain trip quality and reduce legal risk.  Coordinates flow of information and materials to volunteer leaders and is responsible for ensuring that budgeted income is achieved and expenses are controlled.
