Under the general direction of the Counseling Center Director and Associate Director for Clinical Services, this position requires a variety of skills involving case management, crisis intervention, intake and triage assessment, individual and group counseling, outreach, consultation and administration. The Case Manager will primarily maintain and monitor a clinical case management system to provide continuity of care for clients. In addition, the Case Manager will also provide ongoing counseling related services to students. Case management may include meeting with clients who are in need of intensive outpatient or inpatient mental health services, hospital visits, obtaining external referral services for students, maintaining database of community providers, treatment planning and coordination of care, including follow up communication and/or meetings with clients or community providers. This position requires excellence in clinical case management service delivery including crisis coverage, individual and group counseling and emergency intervention. 

Duties include on-call counselor duties and serving as a resource to various constituencies on campus in an effort to enhance student life. The Case Manager handles the delicate task of contacting legal guardians of students and coordinating post hospitalization plans along with regular follow-up with external providers and other University of Miami stakeholders. Some evenings and weekends are required. Through coordination with the Associate Director and Director, a portion of this position’s responsibilities will include direct clinical services. 

The Case Manager is expected to perform his/her duties conscientiously and responsibly; to adhere to high personal standards of behavior with students, colleagues, members of the University community and clients of the University; and in a manner consistent with the ethics of his/her own profession. This person is expected to keep himself/herself informed of current research and professional developments in his/her professional field.

Case Manager Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for the management and coordination of the Counseling Center’s clinical case management system, including the maintenance and expansion of a database of referral resources and community services.

  • Collaborate with UM Counseling Center “UMCC” staff, community providers and other campus constituencies in the planning, implementation, and coordination of care of UMCC clients.

  • Assist students with mental health services coordination and needs, including, but not limited to, referral to community resources, and facilitate access to medical care. This includes coordination and facilitation of hospitalizations and mental health treatment through and post discharge as well as maintenance of a hospitalizations database.

  • Follow up to ensure that clients are appropriately assessed, successfully referred, and compliant with treatment recommendations.

  • Initiate and maintain ongoing liaison relationships with community health providers, services, hospitals, and other resources.

  • Provide daytime and on‐call crisis services.

  • Provide emergency/crisis care in the form of triage services.

  • Collaborate and consult with key stakeholders on and off‐campus to develop and maintain comprehensive and multidisciplinary mental health care for students.

  • Consult with faculty, staff, students, family members and student guardians.

  • Requires some evening and weekend work.

  • Provide outreach, consultation and emergency/crisis services.

Clinical and Other Responsibilities 

  • Complete records punctually according to record keeping/report writing procedures that are currently operative at the Counseling Center and required by legal and ethical regulations.

  • Submit all service reports, or other communications involving the clinical operations of the Counseling Center which are intended for persons, departments, or agencies outside of the Counseling Center for review and approval of the Director or Associate Clinical Director of the Counseling Center before transmitting them.
