Medication Access Specialist, MAC, Oncology Patient Assistance

Medication Access Specialists are responsible for providing front line, direct contact with patients, pharmacies, manufacturers and providers. This position will support the specialty and the oncology service lines triage and patient assistance needs by screening and coordinating the application of medication assistance opportunities for patients. This includes, but is not limited to, manufacturer assistance programs, disease-based assistance programs, and internal assistance. This individual will be responsible for communication of assistance determination outcomes both verbally and electronically with providers and clinical team members. Development of standard work and workflow improvements, including implementation of new technology, is within the scope of this role. Attends periodic area meetings. Attends required in-service’s and skills development courses and maintains technician certification. This individual, like all department employees, will be expected to uphold the hospital’s key values and to be a team player at all times.
Activities performed support the Medication Access Center (MAC). The MAC serves as the hub for medication prior authorizations associated with service lines within the WFBH enterprise.

- Variable 1st shift (0800-1900, hrs. vary based on clinic needs), M-F, weekend/holidays TBD

How You’ll Impact Patient Care:
Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Follows hospital standards to foster a collaborative work environment by utilizing communication, interpersonal skills, and team building.
- Verifies patient insurance for cost reduction.
- Maintains updated patient records and promptly flags issues.
- Encourages medication compliance and reports adverse events.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders for effective communication.
- Administers patient pharmacy care plans, performs data entry, and maintains compliance knowledge.
- Efficiently routes prescriptions to the appropriate pharmacy.
- Aids in streamlined order fulfillment.
- Supports team-based quality improvement and ongoing learning.
- Contributes to departmental goals and recommends performance standards.
What You Will Need
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
Nice To Have (Not Required)
- Associate degree or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Three years’ pharmacy experience and two years call center or customer service experience highly preferred.
- Retail pharmacy or healthcare/medical group experience and two years of healthcare related billing preferred.
- PTCB technician certification (CPhT) preferred.
- North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration required within 30 days of employment.
- PTCB technician certification (CPhT) within 180 days of employment.
