The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units specialize in the post-operative acute care of patients requiring heart surgery, open and endovascular thoraco and abdominal aneurysm repairs, as well thoracic and other vascular surgical procedures. All post-operative patients come directly from the operating room and are recovered, stabilized, weaned and extubated in these units.
The patient population has a wide range of complex medical conditions that may require IABP therapy, CRRT, and thrombolytic therapy. In addition, J55 provides specialized care to individuals requiring heart transplantation, lung transplantation, and ventricular assist devices, such as HeartMate, Thoratec, Abiomed, and ECMO. Nurse-to-patient ratios are routinely 1:2, highly acute patients are 1:1 until stable.
A caregiver in this position works days, 7:00am—7:30pm. Weekend and holiday rotation is required.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN. Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.
Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.
Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma/GED
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (upon or within new hire period)
Nursing students required to have BLS prior to hire
One year of recent, full-time patient care experience
OR nursing student with at least one completed clinical rotation as part of an accredited Nursing School Program
Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) OR additional education/training (e.g., mental health)
