The Team

The Budget and Finance team sits within Finance and Business Support in the Department of Health and plays a central role in developing, managing and reporting on the Department’s budget. The team works at a corporate level, coordinating the annual State Budget process, supporting funding flows across the health system, and providing high-quality financial advice to Executive and Government stakeholders. 

Working closely with internal areas and key external partners such as the Department of Treasury and Finance and the National Health Funding Body, the team ensures that funding arrangements for the Tasmanian Health Service are accurate, timely and aligned with policy requirements. Through collaboration, strong stakeholder relationships and a focus on continuous improvement, the team supports the delivery of a sustainable, high-quality health system for the Tasmanian community. 

The Role

The Principal Budget Analyst provides leadership and specialist expertise in the development and management of the Department’s budget. The role leads and mentors a team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality budget processes, financial analysis and reporting to support decision-making at senior levels. 

Key responsibilities include coordinating the State Budget process, preparing authoritative financial advice and reporting for Executive and the Chief Financial Officer, and managing complex funding arrangements, including interactions with the Tasmanian Health Service and national funding bodies. The role also builds strong stakeholder relationships, contributes to financial policy and systems, and represents the Department in cross-agency forums and working groups. 

You will need

• Extensive experience in budget development and financial management within a complex environment, supported by strong analytical and conceptual skills. 
• Proven leadership capability, including experience leading teams, influencing stakeholders and driving outcomes across organisational boundaries. 
• Highly developed communication and reporting skills, with the ability to provide clear, authoritative advice on complex financial matters.

Details of appointment

Permanent full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible. 

*Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Salary

$132,460 to $139,392 per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

• Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2025

Eligibility

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

• Relevant tertiary qualifications, together with membership of, or eligible for membership of, either CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand or the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) or equivalent experience
