Overview:   
We are seeking a Technician: powder synthesis and additive manufacturing who will focus on running and developing expertise on a lab-scale powder atomizer to fabricate new alloys for additive manufacturing (AM) and deposit these powders on different AM systems.  This position resides in the Materials for Advanced Manufacturing Group in the Materials Science and Processing Section, Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   

 

As part of our team, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team of research and technical staff at ORNL to run a lab-scale atomizer to make metal alloy powders for use on different AM platforms. You will be responsible for the day-to-day operations and upkeep of the atomizer. You will also work with different project leads to develop process parameters for these newly designed alloys for use in different AM systems like laser powder bed fusion or blown powder deposition. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:  

  • Day-to-day operation of a lab-scale powder atomizer

  • Ensuring that the atomizer is operating with minimum downtime and coordinate with appropriate staff to address if any challenges arise

  • Running laser powder bed system

  • Ability to clean up the powder bed system to facilitate material changeover with minimum cross-contamination

  • Safe operations of the systems in line with ORNL’s safety culture

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED with at least four years of relevant experience; an AS degree and at least two years of experience, or a higher degree in lieu of relevant experience will also be considered

  • Familiarity with MS Word and Excel to prepare job reports

  • Strong background in CAD/CAM

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.


Special Requirements:

  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
