Neonatal/Pediatric ECMO Specialist, Day shift (7A-7P)

 

Occ Summary

Perform, evaluate, and coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice. Work performed in accordance with physician orders. Defined duties are performed in neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient populations in intermediate, intensive and emergency care areas.

 

Work Performed

Perform all the duties and responsibilities of the Respiratory Care Practitioner Advanced. Insertion of radial arterial catheters. Administer Nitric Oxide Gasth erapy. Administer Heliox gas therapy. Certified in adult and pediatric or oscillating ventilation. Administer Carbon Dioxide gas therapy. Certified in Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) (Specific to pediatric and neonatal team). Facilitate emergency airway procedures. Implement clinical care protocols. Develop patient care plans for physician intensive care rounds. Provide orientation, education, and training for Duke residents in assigned units. Provide orientation, education and training for Level I and Level II respiratory therapists. Provide patient and therapeutic assessment to assure optimal medical decisions. Review and revise policy, procedures, and practice guidelines. Assist in the evaluation of products/equipment. Maintain environment and supply inventory of assigned unit. Function as alternate supervisor.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge necessary to make appropriate clinical decisions and interaction relative to the specific age of a patient. Skills validation/ certification of competencies for the duties and responsibilities require/ certifications of competencies for the duties and responsibilities ofre d for a Level I and Level II respiratory therapist. Skills validation this level. Must maintain annual skill maintenance requirements. Must maintain annual safety/compliance requirements. Must maintain North Carolina annual license requirements for CEUs. Attendance at Just -in-Time supervisory training. Work involves contact with patients of all ages, family members, physicians, nursing, and all other members of the health care team. Work is performed in all areas of Duke Hospital. Work may require lifting or pushing in excess of 30 pounds. Required to carry emergency airway bag weighing approximately20 pounds Work requires walking, running, climbing and bending. Minimum Qualifications

 

Education

Completion of a two-year CoARC approved respiratory care program (associate degree or equivalent) required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

Experience

Two years' experience in clinical respiratory therapy, including one- year experience in intensive care respiratory required. ECMO experience preferred. Experience working in a team environment and excellent communication skills. Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.

 

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

North Carolina State Licensure with ECMO verification, required. Registry (RRT) by the National Association for Respiratory Care (NBRC), required. AHA Basic Life Support (BLS), required. AH
