Position Summary

The Director of Protective Services provides leadership in directing programs to assure the safety and security of faculty, staff, students, visitors, and property. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating all programs and activities of the Protective Services Department (WUSMPS).

WUSMPS is an accredited (NACSA) force of armed response officers and unarmed public safety and communications officers who provide security coverage for the medical campus on a 24/7/365 basis. The medical campus comprises 65 university buildings and serves over 10.5 million gross square feet of space, 164 acres, and a 4.6-mile campus perimeter. WUSMPS supports the clinical, educational, and research missions of WashU Med and maintains a close partnership with WashU Emergency Management and campus partners to ensure adequate planning and response.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Establishes, coordinates, and administers operational guidelines and procedures for the department. 
  • Prepares, submits, and supervises the annual budget process, which currently has an operational budget of over $5M.
  • Hires, directs, evaluates, and leads staff (3 direct reports, 57 indirect reports).
  • Develops and oversees the implementation of campus safety, security, law enforcement education, and service programs, including emergency medical and behavioral health assistance.  
  • Oversees investigations related to criminal incidents and policy rule violations.
  • Establishes positive relations with students, faculty, staff, and the external community as part of the community policing security program. 
  • Coordinates various short- and long-range planning activities to effectively guide and direct the administration and operation of the organization, including planning for physical security for new buildings and business continuity.  
  • Develops guidelines and procedures to ensure the department and School of Medicine comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws. 
  • Maintains a comprehensive reporting system of statistical data and prepares reports (Clery et al.).  
  • Coordinates services with other medical school entities and affiliated hospitals.  
  • Directs and maintains security platforms, including access control, surveillance (CCTV), and other support systems.
  • Integral partner of the Operations and Facilities Management Senior Leadership Team. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
