Director, Reliability and Automation

Job Summary:

The main responsibility of the Director, Reliability and Automation is to provide strategic leadership and oversight, ensuring the department’s goals align with organizational objectives. This role oversees the company’s operating procedures, budget and improves company operations. Provides support and guidance to other departments and programs including, pole and conductor replacement programs, line rebuild programs, distribution reliability improvements, transmission line rebuilds, substation reliability work and rebuilds, and ensure system performance, as well as meet deliverables and project targets. this role reports to the Vice President Distribution Engineering & Reliability.

Job Description:

• Develops goals and objectives for grid improvement programs aimed at improving system reliability.

• Develops and executes organizational strategy to sustain and expand the impact of reliability capital program.  

• Ensures the delivery of metrics and actions associated with the metrics; provides leadership in reporting and development of LUMA Grid Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

• Owns and oversees up to three program briefs (responsibility >$100M/year) across regional reliability, distribution n automation and analytics.

• Facilitates input from appropriate professionals on matters requiring technical expertise.

• Initiates process improvements or recommendations actively, particularly across assigned program brief activities.

• Ensures competency of staff by ensuring there is professional responsibility for all work.

• Manages escalated department issues.

• Optimizes the use of resources across the group and liaisons with the other Directors, Senior Directors, and Vice Presidents to ensure operational and strategic targets can be met.

• Provides leadership and direction for new initiatives within the group.

• Develops and manages the strategic application of human resources within and across the Engineering Groups.

• Leads the regional reliability team, distribution automation, reporting and analytics team, and is actively involved in performance management plans, coaching, and succession planning.

• Works with engineering managers to ensure all employees have career development plans, goals are met, and that all strategic areas within the group are fully integrated.

• Provides visible leadership to ensure compliance with the corporate policies and best practices related to Health, Safety and Environment.

• Supports long-range financial planning within the groups considering customer, community, and employee growth expectations.

• Follows all policies and procedures.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Performs major storm restoration work and associated drills as assigned.

Additional Job Description:

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or relevant technical discipline.

• Minimum ten (10) years of experience in an electric utility environment including demonstrated experience at a senior manager or director level.

• Well-rounded technical aptitude, high problem-solving ability, innovation and change management leadership, and excellent teamwork skills to be successful.

• Expert understanding of IEEE 1366 and related reliability standards and industry best practices.

• Proven leadership skills & ability to nurture/coach professionals & field employees.

• Strong business knowledge in the utility & regulated environment.

• Working knowledge of system Operations groups & utility operational challenges.

• Proven ability to manage and resolve conflict.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Fluent in English and Spanish (being able to read, speak, and write) is preferred.

• Preferred knowledge in design standards and previous work experience in supporting design or new business functions at an electric utility.

Licenses/ Certifications:

• Valid Driver's License

• Professional Engineering License issued by the Puerto Rico Examining Board for Engineers, Architects, Surveyors and Landscape Architects and be a member of the Puerto Rico Association of Engineers and Surveyors is preferred.
