Director of Claims
SteadilyAbout the role
Steadily is an insurance technology company that specializes in rental property owners (landlords). We’re three years old, just over 100 people, manage $6B in risk, and are intent on becoming the world’s best and largest insurer of rental properties.
We exist to deliver fast, affordable insurance and to pay claims quickly and fairly. To do that, we hire the best engineers, actuaries, sales, and service people in the country to build the experience that we’d want if we were the client.
We’ve grown our Independent Agency channel significantly and are looking for an excellent agency trainer to enable our agents to be successful using our platform!
Steadily is hiring a Director of Claims entrepreneur who will be responsible for launching our internal claims operation. If you thrive on ambiguity and lofty goals, this is the role for you. This is an opportunity to bend the growth curve of your career. You will get exposure that could take decades at more established companies.
What You'll Do
- You’ll construct, manage, and iterate on the claims process from beginning to end including selecting our CMS, building our national vendor network, drafting our claims manual, establishing reserve methodologies, ensure compliance with all claims related laws and regulations, etc.
- You’ll manage highly organized claims files which will exceed the expectations of internal and external auditor scrutiny including ample documentation, regular diary entries, cause and origin investigations, subrogation referrals, coverage opinions, etc.
- We take a “roll up your sleeves” approach to leadership, so you will be expected to handle claims directly for a significant period of time until the team grows to a certain size.
- If there is a catastrophe, you are responsible for leading the claims department through it which could lead to working seven days a week for months to ensure an excellent experience for impacted customers.
- You’ll work closely with underwriting, product, actuarial, and customer service to ensure profitability and an overall excellent experience for customers.
- Provide large loss notice summaries to internal stakeholders, fronting carriers, reinsurers, etc.
- Implement a robust QA process to ensure compliance with claims handling guidelines, state mandated timelines, and contractual requirements
- Secure all of the licenses needed to adjust claims in all 50 states including California and Hawaii.
- Hire and lead our foundational claims staff who will drive claims excellence for years to come.
- This position reports directly to the Chief Underwriting Officer
Your Background
- Experienced: You have at least 10 years of experience in P&C insurance claims and 5 years of claims management experience. You’re a property claims savant.
- Nice to have: You are also knowledgeable on 3rd party claims and 1st party litigation. AIC and/or ARM is a plus.
- Self-Driven: You thrive under intense pressure and can manage a large workload and projects with minimal oversight. There is no task too small or beneath you; “that’s not my job” is not in your mantra. You are resourceful and will run through walls to get stuff done.
- Insurance: Extensive knowledge of standard claims practices, estimating, claims management systems, vendor management, coverage opinions, subrogation, SIU and everything in between. Bonus if you have experience standing up new systems and seeking out new vendors.
- Leadership: You know how to build and lead a high performing team. Your team members respect you for both how competent you are and how you never ask them to do anything you wouldn’t do yourself. You are a fanatic about cycle times, leakage, customer experience, and leveraging technology.
- Project Management: You have above average project management skills. You’re great at moving the ball forward on multiple projects simultaneously while also maintaining a high level perspective of how all the parts work together.
- Hungry: You want to make the leap into an earlier-stage tech company to rapidly accelerate your growth. You want to roll up your sleeves and hustle – you are not looking for a traditional 9-5 job.
