Our beautiful resale boutique, the Asheville Humane Thrift Store, opened in 2020 and is a vital revenue source for Asheville Humane Society. Engaging our community, providing a welcoming shopping environment, and breaking sales records with our incredible growth, this bustling shop has quickly become a community favorite!


The Asheville Humane Thrift Store is conveniently located at the River Ridge Marketplace in East Asheville and is open 6 days a week, Monday - Saturday, from 10 am - 6 pm. 


Position Summary:

The Thrift Store Sales Associate assists the management team with the general operations of the Asheville Humane Society Thrift Store. This includes: assisting with the daily flow of donations, processing sales at the register, communicating and interacting with volunteers, donors, and customers, encouraging and supporting volunteers, and facilitating a safe and healthy working and shopping environment for donors, customers, volunteers, and staff.


Schedule: The Thrift Store Intake Assistant is a part-time position located at the Asheville Humane Thrift Store. The schedule is part-time (24 hours/week) and work days may be flexible depending on the store's needs. 


Compensation & Benefits: The compensation for the Thrift Store Sales Associate is $15.50/hour. AHS is pleased to offer a benefits package to part-time employees that includes: 30 hours of PTO in the first year, pet prescription discounts, and more!


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the daily operations of the thrift store.
  • Supervise volunteers in accordance with AHS policies including assigning and directing volunteer work, providing regular and ongoing feedback and appreciation, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
  • Work cooperatively and congenially with volunteers of various ages and backgrounds in a supervisory role.
  • Assist with training and supervision of volunteer cashiers.
  • Ensure that all volunteers provide excellent customer service including greeting donors and customers, and helping with questions about store operations, merchandise, location, and pricing.
  • Ensure accuracy of sales transactions, including accurately issuing change when necessary for cash transactions. Report any discrepancies to the Thrift Store Manager.
  • Ensure that only authorized staff members or volunteers operate the cash registers.
  • Assist with acceptance of donations, providing tax receipts as requested.
  • Responsible for assisting with the general upkeep and appearance of the sales floor and intake areas. Report problems, accidents, unsafe conditions, or equipment issues to the Thrift Store Manager or Thrift Store Supervisor and work collaboratively to resolve issues.
  • Complete thrift store donation sorting, tagging, pricing, and organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements

  • Previous thrift store or retail store experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Customer service experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and communication skills.
  • Good judgment when dealing with the public and difficult situations with customers.
  • This position requires the ability to stoop, bend, reach, and lift or move items weighing up to 75 pounds (when lifting alone) or 250 pounds (when team lifting).
