Description
The mission of Milestone Recovery is to provide compassionate care and services to empower individuals experiencing substance use disorders, mental illnesses and homelessness to attain an enhanced quality of life regardless of ability to pay.
Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of the organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, assisting with budgeting and reporting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and donor requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, mission-driven, and experienced in non-profit accounting.
Onsite Position: Though we have flexibility to offer some remote work, this role is primarily an onsite position at our India St. Portland, ME office.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain general ledger and ensure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions.
- Work with programs to compile data and assist with billing to Maine Care, City of Portland, and other entities.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
- Assist with the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and grant reports.
- Reconcile bank statements and monitor cash flow.
- Process accounts payable and receivable, ensuring proper documentation and approvals.
- Support annual audit process, including preparation of schedules and liaising with auditors.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and non-profit accounting standards (e.g., FASB, IRS regulations).
- Track restricted and unrestricted funds and ensure proper allocation of expenses.
- Act as secondary payroll processor, stepping in as needed to ensure seamless payroll administration.
- Administer and monitor company credit card program, including issuing cards, setting spending limits, reconciling monthly statements, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and documentation requirements.
- Maintain financial files and records in accordance with internal policies and external regulations.
Requirements
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 2+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit setting.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks
- Strong Excel skills
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Commitment to the mission and values of Milestone Recovery.
- CPA or working toward CPA certification is a plus.
This position is full benefits-eligible starting first of the month following start date. The pay range for the role is $35 - $39 per hour.
