Occ Summary

The Nurse Clinician is responsible and accountabl e for clinicalexpertise for specific patient populations. The incumbent functions as aclinician, educator, investigator, consultant and leader. Clinicaljudgments are based on a synthesis of current research, concepts ,principles, theories, and outcomes to solve complex problems. The Nurse Clinician functions as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team,con tributing to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and inproviding leadership to the organization.


Work Performed

P rovides specialized nursing treatment, care, and education to patientsin accordance with physician/nursing orders and established policies andpr ocedures.Serves as a resource to patients and families, providing preope rativecounseling and follow-up problem solving after discharge from theh ospital.Coordinates the development, utilization, and evaluation of appr opriateeducational resources and interventions that assist thepatient/caregiver in developing the skills for self care.Promotes evidence-based p ractice through staff education andparticipation in developing, implemen ting, and evaluating processstandards such as plans of care, protocols, and guidelines. As an APSmember, collaborates in preparing standardized orders (CPOE) andprotocol-driven practice updates and reviews.Assesses the educational needs of the patient/caregiver as it relates tothe disea se process, alterations in function, and assimilation back intothe home and community.Utilize current nursing and clinical research to support e vidence-basedclinical decision-making and practiceParticipates in qualit y/performance improvement programs and projects,product evaluation, outc omes evaluation studies and/or clinicalresearch..Utilizes teaching and l earning theories to assist patients and familieswith physical and emotio nal impact of body changes and chronic illness.Provides clinical experie nce in a preceptor role for nursing studentsattending institutions that have contractual agreements with DUHS.Participates in the orientation of new nursing staff and provides expertcoaching and guidance through both formal and informal one-on-oneteaching with nursing staff.The work envi ronment involves risk discomforts that are typical of anacute care setti ng to include working with patients under isolation anduniversal precaut ions. It requires safety precautions, ongoing educationand health risk m onitoring. Contact with specimens, chemicals, sharps,radiation, technic al equipment and fumes are possible. Employees arerequired to wear pers onal protective attire according to hospitalpolicies and OSHA guidelines . The work activity and patient acuitylevels can create a stressful atm osphere.
