Position Marketing Statement

The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is accepting applications to fill the position of Boiler Safety Specialist.  The Boiler Safety Specialist will perform complex technical duties of an inspectional and consultative nature in the administration and enforcement of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act of Illinois.  The ideal candidate can successfully perform technical inspections to ascertain safe operating conditions of boilers, pressure vessels, flame safeguard equipment, and other ancillary equipment.  Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize and organize tasks efficiently is essential.  As the Boiler Safety Specialist, the selected candidate will have access to state healthcare, benefits, and a pension plan.  We invite all qualified applicants to apply to join the OSFM team and contribute to the public safety of the citizens of Illinois.

Essential Functions

  • Inspects all boilers and unfired pressure vessels in a designated territory of the state which are under the jurisdiction of the Boiler Safety Act as to their construction, installation, and condition for operation.
  • Calculates maximum allowable working pressures of boilers and pressure vessels using design formulas from the American Society of Mechanical Engineer’s Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code after determining existing conditions of the object.
  • Conducts shop inspections of boilers and unfired pressure vessels in the process of manufacture observing fit-up, welding, and material content for compliance with specifications for construction and fabrication set forth by the American Society of Mechanical Engineer’s Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and the Illinois Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Act and submits documentation to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
  • Completes and submits inspection reports to Office of the State Fire Marshal for processing of all
