The Department of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Chicago is the home to a wide range of scientists studying critical cellular processes in a variety of model organisms.


Job Summary

The Malamy Lab seeks a Lab Manager to join our team; we use the hydrozoan model organism Clytia hemisphaerica to study epithelial wound healing. The Lab Manager will conduct experiments related to this project and will participate in experimental design, data generation and analysis, and grant and publication writing. The Lab Manager will lead the generation and maintenance of transgenic animals, they will help train undergraduates in general lab techniques. As the Lab Manager, they will be in charge of safety compliance, supplies, ordering and reconciliation of expense reports. This position will be responsible for ensuring the health of the Clytia habitat and will also train and oversee part time/student workers who help to maintain the system.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experiments and collect data relevant to lab goals, contributing to lab grants and publications.

  • Maintain and improve the Clytia hemisphaerica colony used by the lab.

  • Generate transgenic Clytia, including basic molecular cloning, microinjection, screening and genetic analysis of lines.

  • Manage the logistical, financial and regulatory needs of the lab.

  • Train undergraduate researchers and paid assistants in Clytia husbandry and cell biology/molecular techniques.

  • Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan.

  • Supports data collection and analytical needs of research projects. Conducts literature reviews and helps write reports and manuscripts. Ensures project compliance with different policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.

  • Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • 2+ years doing experimental work in a biology research lab.

  • 1+ years maintaining a model organism for research purposes strongly preferred.

  • Skills in basic molecular biology techniques.

  • Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and common data analysis software.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions

  • Lab environment.

  • Moderate physical activity which includes reaching for materials, carrying materials, safe handling and manipulation of chemicals and biological materials according to approved protocols, writing, computer use, standing at the bench, and bending at the waist/crouching to access certain pieces of equipment.

  • Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, very good manual dexterity and the ability to perform fine motor tasks. 

  • Weekend/Evening hours: Occasional weekend hours to care for animals as needed.
