JOB PURPOSE:

Developing and securing philanthropic support from institutional donors is vital to the University and the mission of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). The Director of Development, Institutional Giving, Business and Law brings a high level of creativity and passion to cultivating relationships with institutional donors and drives activity in two high-performing centers of fundraising: the School of Business and the School of Law.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

This position generates revenue and expands an existing philanthropic foundation and corporate foundation funding base. Reporting to the Executive Director, Institutional Giving, the Director of Development will be a thought partner in creating strategic solutions and will effectively communicate Howard University’s unique value proposition. 

Serving as the primary relationship manager and business development lead for institutional donors within the School of Business (undergraduate and graduate) and the School of Law (graduate), the Director of Development works directly with academic program directors and specific faculty to bolster philanthropic partnerships and manages external relationships that include corporate representatives, funding partners, consultants, and campus visitors Teamwork and collaboration both within DAR and the University at large are essential.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The position serves as a key partner within the Institutional Giving team in meeting annual fundraising goals. The role develops and implements a comprehensive fundraising plan to significantly grow and scale institutional giving (corporations, foundations, organizations) for the Schools of Business and Law, with annual fundraising targets and longer-term goals, strategies, and key performance indicators. The Director of Development must develop a balanced approach to serving both schools and will be encouraged to develop and seek opportunities for interdisciplinary funding. Critical to success is the timely and accurate monitoring of relationship milestones, deliverables and stewardship moments.

This position is required to manage a personal portfolio of prospects, complete a required number of meetings each month, keep accurate records of all interactions and fundraising activities, and emphasizes frequent, values-driven, and customized communications. The role conducts research to identify new prospects, prepares solicitation strategies, submits letters of inquiry, and supports the development of grant proposals, budgets, reports, and needed correspondence.
