Clinical Technician I - Duke Primary Care Durham Pediatrics
Durham Pediatrics at North Duke Street is a trusted, high-energy clinic providing expert care for newborns, children, teens, and adolescents. With a dedicated team of board-certified pediatricians, the clinic serves 16,000 patients annually, offering comprehensive services like well-child check-ups, immunizations, physicals, and in-clinic testing. Location: 2609 North Duke Street, Suite 1000, Durham, NC 27704
Hours: 8am – 6pm Monday – Thursday
8am - 5pm Friday
8am - 12pm Saturday, some Saturday commitment will be required
What you will do:
The Clinical Technician is responsible for performing a variety of routine and specialized laboratory procedures to support the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role ensures accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to quality and safety standards across all technical and administrative functions.
Responsibilities:
- Perform a wide range of routine and specialized laboratory tests and procedures, including cytogenetics, general laboratory testing, Point-of-Care Testing, urinalysis (without microscopy), phlebotomy, cytopreparatory procedures, and specimen management.
- Prepare and initiate special tests and procedures as directed, following established protocols and guidelines.
- Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with patients, families, and healthcare personnel to identify and resolve issues or escalate concerns when appropriate.
- Obtain and document information for laboratory records, explain procedures to patients, provide reassurance, and encourage cooperation during testing.
- Utilize standard laboratory equipment and hospital information systems to ensure accurate patient identification, record maintenance, registration/accessioning of specimens, and order entry.
- Perform and document quality control, safety, and infection control procedures to ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory standards.
- Receive, process, and distribute specimens, supplies, and reports in accordance with laboratory procedures and protocols.
- Maintain inventory and stock supplies as needed, including glassware, laboratory carts, and hand trays.
- Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment; perform routine maintenance as outlined in laboratory procedures.
- Utilize various hospital and laboratory information systems and software applications to complete assigned tasks accurately and efficiently.
- Assist with the preparation, organization, and maintenance of laboratory specimens, slides, and related documentation.
- Support office operations through word processing, data entry, and record management as required.

What you will need:
Education
- High School diploma or GED. For assignment to phlebotomy, completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.
- Minimal educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director if minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.
Experience
- Alternatively, an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. One year previous clinical lab experience
