About the role

  • Westwin Elements is seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to support the design, implementation, and maintenance of control systems for America’s first nickel refinery. This role will be instrumental in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of process control systems, including instrumentation selection, PLC/DCS programming, and automation integration.

What you'll do

  • Design and Installation of Instrumentation Systems:
    • Design all aspects of complex electrical and instrumentation engineering assignments, ensuring comprehensive and thorough project execution. This role requires extensive progressive experience in the field and involves applying advanced engineering techniques and analysis.
    • Design comprehensive control systems, encompassing automation system architecture, control system installation specifications, and preliminary layouts. Prioritize user-friendly, maintainable solutions that align with client expectations.
    • Coordinate with local instrumentation vendors to ensure instrumentation aligns with design parameters.
    • Provide input and develop instrumentation specifications and datasheets for purchase.
    • Review and verify detailed technical vendor documents for quality and accuracy
    • Review and approve engineering deliverables and work packages to ensure quality and plant standards are being maintained
    • Assist the procurement team with coordination of instrumentation and control systems for nickel refining plants.
    • Support the installation, calibration, and commissioning of new instruments and systems.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
    • Provide technical support for the operation and troubleshooting of instrumentation and control systems.
    • Provide guidance and procedures to others to perform routine inspections and diagnostics to ensure instruments are functioning optimally
  • Process Control and Automation:
    • Design, configure, and maintain process control systems (e.g., PLC, SCADA, DCS) to optimize refining operations.
    • Implement and calibrate control loops to ensure that refining processes are operating efficiently and safely.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Collect and analyze instrumentation data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
    • Prepare technical reports and documentation on instrumentation performance, maintenance schedules, and system upgrades.
    • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Ensure instrumentation systems comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and environmental guidelines.
    • Work with the safety and compliance teams to address any potential hazards related to instrumentation and control systems.
    • Participate in safety audits and risk assessments related to instrumentation.
  • Training:
    • Work closely with process engineers, maintenance teams, and operations staff to enhance the performance of the demonstration plant and in preparation for commercial plants.
    • Provide training to plant operators and technicians on the proper use and maintenance of instrumentation.
    • Assist in the development of maintenance procedures and documentation for instrumentation systems.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Automation, a related field, or relevant experience.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in instrumentation and control engineering, ideally within the mining, refining, or chemical industries.
    • Experience with process control systems
