About the role

The R&D Sr. Chemist performs intermediate specialized analyses, testing, and formulation of new products. Responsibilities will include latex synthesis including developing new or updated formulas, performing moderate or sub-sets of large projects, and determining quality standards. The R&D Sr. Chemist may work independently to commercialize new products and will have additional responsibilities including interfacing and supporting manufacturing. The R&D Sr. Chemist leads projects, has knowledge of several product lines, applications, and markets should have experience with types of polymer synthesis and coating formulations. May supervise support level technicians and entry level chemists on a day-to-day basis.

  • Responsible for planning and performing R&D investigations for new product development under the supervision of the Synthesis Technical Manager.
  • Serves as a key technical team member supporting complex cross-functional team project(s); collaborating with Analytical/Material Science, Process Chemistry, HSE and various Business groups to advance project(s) and achieve common goal(s).
  • Performs emulsion polymerization, as well as coating formulation and application testing. Gathers and analyzes data, refines technical approach/strategy, and recommends next steps. Communicates results effectively and writes project reports.
  • Uses experimental design principles to increase fundamental understanding and find solution(s) for achieving the project goal(s). 
  • Reads and interprets patents, examines new product concepts and technology, and determines how to improve or utilize technology to develop new products. 
  • Serves as the primary contact for and responds to standard to moderately complex questions and concerns from plants, research technicians, quality control, and other internal parties regarding development and related programs and services.
  • Operates, cleans, and calibrates all forms of equipment that requires professional judgment and background; also utilizes technical or standard equipment during projects
  • May supervise or serve as a lead to technicians, entry level chemists, or support personnel performing research projects.
  • Interprets and applies department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules and regulations; ensures compliance with these areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

FORMAL EDUCATION: 
Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (“STEM”) field
• Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment. 

Preferred:
• Master’s or Ph.D. in Chemistry or related area

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
Required:
• 5 or more years polymer synthesis lab experience

Preferred:
• 5-7 years of polymer and coatings specific industry experience
• In-depth understanding of polymer structure-property relationships and coating formulation.
• Proficiency in emulsion polymerization highly desired.

10%

 

Upon completion of construction, the individual selected for this role will primarily work at the new Sherwin-Williams Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio. Construction is expected to be complete in Q4 2024. Until then, the role will be based at Breen Technology Center, located at 601 Canal Road, Cleveland, OH 44113.
