Job Description
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC four (4) days per week, at minimum.
The Role
To strengthen our Motorsports program, we are seeking an Applied Vehicle Dynamics Simulation Operations Engineer to support the integration and use of GM’s simulation toolchain within NASCAR race teams. This role focuses on delivering engineering support that drives measurable on-track performance improvements. The engineer will collaborate with race teams and GM engineers to conduct analysis using offline simulation tools and Driver-in-the-Loop (DiL) simulators. Responsibilities include supporting tool usage and training, gathering team feedback for simulation development, refining vehicle modeling inputs, improving simulation correlation through test rig data, and conducting vehicle dynamics studies. The ideal candidate is proficient in engineering software, proactive in performance-related collaboration, and passionate about working with accurate, efficient simulation models.
What You’ll Do
Play a key role as a performance simulation support engineer embedded within a NASCAR Cup Series racing team
Use advanced analytics and GM tools to process and interpret test and simulation results, providing insight for performance optimization and simulation modeling, while improving model correlation
Be part of the broader simulation support team seeking to continuously improve and investigate methods to utilize the simulation toolchain and increase race team performance
Assist teams with test plan development and execution using testing equipment, including SPMM/Kinematic rigs, 7-post test rigs, and push-up/down rigs
Provide race teams expert knowledge in the simulation toolchain functionality and modeling practices
During at-track testing, when necessary, provide real-time support, including simulation model tuning based on setup adjustments and driver feedback
Troubleshoot simulation performance issues and recommend solutions during testing and competition
Represent racing team needs as a stakeholder in the simulation toolchain development process
Clearly communicate technical data, results and recommendations to GM and race team members
What You’ll Need (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent degree
5 or more years of highly validated experience using simulation or other vehicle dynamics-based modeling software within a professional motorsport organization, preferably in a prior race-engineering role
Highly analytical, customer focused, and structured, with positive relationship and strong communicative skills
Experience using data analysis software such as Pi Toolbox, MoTeC i2, McLaren ATLAS
Exposure to modern software development tooling and environments, preferably C#, Python and Git
Knowledge of high-performance vehicle, tire, and aero modeling techniques
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to interact well with others
Must be a great teammate, be able to work a flexible schedule and have a high level of integrity
Passion for motorsports and strong understanding of vehicle dynamics engineering
Ability to multi-task in a multifaceted, constantly evolving environment, bringing a strong work ethic and integrity
This job may be eligible for relocation benefits
Travel to team or GM tests may be required up to 15% of time
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Master’s degree in engineering, physics or related subject
Knowledge of using Dymola/Modelica in a simulation toolchain
Exposure to modern software development tooling and environments, preferably C# and Git
Prior NASCAR Race Engineering experience – utilizing simulation tools
Experience working with DiL simulators
