About the Role
The New York Times is looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Data Platform mission to lead the Privacy & Governance Services team. The team builds and maintains technical solutions that enable the NYT to stay in compliance with complex and rapidly changing domestic and international privacy laws as well as enable data producers to own the quality of their data and data consumers to discover available high-quality data for their needs.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of engineers, promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Hire and develop engineering talent within the team.
- Oversee the execution of roadmap items and increase productivity and delivery.
- Collaborate with product managers and partners to define product requirements and roadmaps.
- Guide technical decisions and architectural design for the team's projects.
- Monitor and report on initiative progress and risks.
- Coach engineers, helping them make an impact while growing in their careers.
- Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts and a cost attribution model for your team's cloud solutions.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- You will report to the Senior Director of Data Platform.
Basic Qualifications:
- 1+ years experience as an engineering manager or 3+ years of experience in a technical leadership role working with cross-functional partners
- 5+ years of experience in full-stack software engineering designing and developing scalable, high-performance systems that handle large volumes of traffic
- Experience working cross-functionally with product and engineering teams at scale
- Experience advocating for technical needs and team members and partnering with product teams to steer multiple stakeholders when needed
- Strong technical fluency — while this is not a hands-on coding role, you should be comfortable reading code, guiding architecture discussions, and working alongside engineers
- Experience developing a high-performance team and growing engineering competencies over time
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of Privacy regulations and solutions for managing and respecting user consent and DSRs
- Experience working with legal, compliance, and/or security teams to align privacy needs for product delivery
- Understanding of modern data platforms, including data management principles and governance solutions such as data cataloging, lineage tracking and data contracts

The annual base pay range for this role is between:$152,000—$190,000 USD
