Under the supervision of the Director, Rehabilitation Services, and working within their scope of practice as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Physical Therapy Manager acts as both a manager and clinical resource to the staff. The Physical Therapy Manager is the direct manager of the staff adhering to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center (LHMC) and regulatory policies and procedures. The Manager is responsible for maintaining the efficient and effective flow of all site/department functions. The Manager is responsible for the daily operation of their department / site including fiscal responsibility.The Manager assesses, plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitative programs that improve or restore physical function, alleviate pain and prevent and improve dysfunction in patients with impairments, functional limitations, disabilities or changes in physical function and health status form injury, disease or other cases.
Job Description:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
1) Leadership
- Interviews, selects, orients, trains and mentors new staff.
- Provides verbal input to Director of Rehabilitation Services on staff and department functions.
- Provides ongoing supervision to staff and provides feedback on their performance. Responds and handles problems appropriately and in a timely fashion.
- Completes and conducts performance appraisals and coaching to LHMC / Lahey Health standards.
- Makes recommendations for pay increases, promotions, transfers and other human resource actions in consultation with the Director of Rehabilitation Services.
- Counsels, disciplines and recommends termination of colleagues as necessary.
- Treats staff with dignity and respect.
- Conducts monthly staff meetings and maintains minutes for colleague review.
- Works as a role model for staff by exhibiting professional and ethical behavior. Fosters a positive attitude in the department and promotes high colleague moral.
- Problem solves in a timely and diplomatic manner. Works collaboratively to improve processes within the department and organization.
- Informs senior management of any site/department problems. These may include but are not limited to safety, equipment, staffing, medical staff and interpersonal problems.
- Supervises professional research activities.
2) Budget Management
- Participates as directed in the decisions for the site/department annual capital expenditures.
- Participates as directed in the preparation of site/department annual budget.
- Responsible for site/department monthly budget maintenance.
- Responsible for site/department achievement of monthly and annual volume goals.
3) Staff Development
- Orients, trains and mentors new staff.
- Allocates and monitors colleagues’ work.
- Provides consistent feedback to staff on an ongoing basis.
- Assures that all staff posses the education, licensure and training needed for their responsibilities and that competence is maintained.
- Serves as a resource for Rehabilitation Services staff.
- Addresses the educational needs of the staff and provides resources to meet those needs.
- Observes and/or co-treats patients with therapists.
- Provides feedback to the Director of Rehabilitation Services on educational needs of the department.
Project Management
- Coordinates the development and over site of site/department quality assurance programs.
- Is involved in department and hospital projects and committees.
- Develops, plans and upgrades programs and protocols.
- Identifies the need for new programs and projects to ensure department excellence.
- Effectively completes all assigned projects and programs thoroughly and in a timely manner.
- Works as a team player within the department and with colleagues in other departments.
Time Management
- Meets department’s standard for productivity.
- Completes individual and site statistics in accordance with department policies.
- Assures that work schedules, procedures and assignments utilize staff in the most effective manner.
Professional Growth:
- Attends professional education workshops, seminars, lectures and conferences to enhance physical therapy skills, patient outcomes and satisfaction.
