Lead Boiler Plant Operator

Department:
Assignment requires availability to work weekends and evening shifts as needed and respond to emergency calls. Required to carry pagers. If required by job duties, employee must be able to fulfill the University requirements concerning issuance and use of University keys. Position Type: Staff Required Education: High school diploma or GED equivalency.
Required Work Experience: No additional work experience needed beyond what is required to obtain the City of Grand Rapids Boiler Engineer License or 2nd Class Stationary Engineer license. Required Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license.
Valid City of Grand Rapids High Pressure Boiler Operator’s license or equivalent certification for 1st or 2nd class stationary engineer per State of Michigan Board of Boiler Rules. Physical Demands:
US military experience in the operation of steam powered systems.
Boiler chemical treatment experience. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Disassemble boilers for cleaning.
Ensure proper feed water treatment of all assigned boilers to include proper chemical analysis and interpretation.
Familiar with boiler plant transmitters and knowledgeable in instrumentation controls.
Inspect steam tunnel transmitters and make repairs as directed.
Lubricate and perform preventative maintenance on boilers, associated equipment, safety devices, and appurtenant systems.
Maintain assigned tools; keep equipment and mechanical space in a neat, organized and clean non-hazardous environment.
Coordinate with vendors for required support, service, and material or supplies delivery.
Coordinate with risk management and engineering partners to maintain all required regulatory information.
Coordinate with service organizations to maintain all required inspections and regulatory certifications of equipment.
Maintain calibration log sheets.
Maintain logs, records, and all safety testing information.
Maintain system flow and differential pressure transmitters.
Maintain, repair, inspect, repack, and/or lubricate condensate return systems, steam traps, PR valves, heat exchangers, steam piping, condensate piping and other steam and boiler related appurtenances.
Maintain, troubleshoot, and operate fire eye controllers and other boiler control devices.
Monitor air for confined space entry.
Operate boilers manually when automatic controls not available or malfunctioning.
Operate computer system for boiler and administrative purposes.
Paint boiler and related equipment as needed.
Regenerate chemical tanks and run all required water tests on boiler water, return, and soft water.
Regenerate water softeners and dealkalizers.
Repack and/or rebuild valves, pumps, etc.
Re-pipe boilers and related equipment as needed.
Requisition of materials and parts.
Start boilers from cold position to bring to full operating pressure and place on line; removes from line and secures.
Inspect and investigate irregularities of steam distribution and condensate return system components on campus.
Use the computerized monitoring system and generate miscellaneous trends for s

Coordinate with contracted partners and University staff to maintain required regulatory information, coordinate required inspections and coordinate vendor support.
