We are looking to bring on board an Epidemiologist for the Data, Research and Vital Statistics Department of the State of Maine CDC.  

The Data, Research and Vital Statistics (DRVS) Epidemiologist shall assist the Department with data linkages, cancer data submissions to the federal government, investigation of constituent-reported cancer concerns, analyze mortality and birth data to establish trends, and monitor possible public health concerns by assessing, analyzing and reporting on Maine Cancer Registry (MCR) surveillance data and other Data, Research, and Vital Statistics (DRVS) data sources maintained by DRVS, including but not limited to:  

A. Vital statistics data and population-based surveys;  

B. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring Survey (PRAMS); and  

C. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS). This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a diverse team focused on growing our impact in the public health field. 

Key Job Duties: 

  • Coordinate the collection analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of state surveillance data to stakeholders. 

  • Collaborate with Maine Cancer Registry, Data, Research, and Vital Statistics, other Maine CDC Programs, and program vendors at the Maine CDC  

  • Provide Public Health Surveillance by assessing, analyzing, and reporting to the Department on vital statistics, cancer surveillance, and population-based survey data related to public inquiries. 

  • Provide program representation at national, regional, state, and local level meetings, conferences, training, and workshops 

  • Assist the Department with reporting requirements of up to five (5) federal grants 

Requirements

Job requirements: 

Knowledge, Qualifications and Skills: 

Required: 

  • A Masters Degree in Epidemiology or closely related field or a Bachelors Degree in Epidemiology or closely related field and two (2) years professional experience in epidemiology. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. 

  • Strong quantitative data analytic skills, including knowledge of major computer-based statistical packages, preferably SAS or R. 

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work with a broad spectrum of administrators, researchers and other professionals. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of public health surveillance systems. 

  • Demonstrated mastery of basic principles of epidemiology and public health. 

 

Preferred: 

  • Knowledge and experience with drafting technical disease information for providers and the public. 

 

Ability to: 

  • Analyze public health data 

  • Draw logical inferences from data analysis 

  • Pay attention to detail 

  • Organize, disseminate, and report public health information 

  • Be flexible and reprioritize during the workday 

  • Willingness to travel for the program as needed 

 

Location: Hybrid, Augusta, Maine. This position is hybrid with a minimum of 2 days per week in the office in Augusta. Remote work environment must have reliable internet connection and ability to hold confidential conversations.
