Glimpse of the Job

The Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University is inviting applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in computational geophysics. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work primarily with Professor Qian Yuan and Professor Benchun Duan to develop and employ algorithms to link mantle convective processes with earthquake ruptures. The position is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on the availability of funding. Candidates with a background in geodynamics, seismology, or geophysics are welcome. The selected candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team and have opportunities to mentor graduate students and undergraduate students.

Opportunities to Contribute:

  • Numerical model development: Develop coupled models of mantle convection and earthquake cycles and ruptures.

  • Preparation of scientific publications: Analyze, interpret, and publish modeled results.

  • Mentor junior scientists: Mentors graduate and undergraduate students in the lab.

  • Presentation of results at professional meetings: Attend and present results at scientific conferences.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. (or have completed all the requirements by the time of appointment) in a relevant field, such as geodynamics, seismology, geophysics, or computational science.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods (e.g., 6–8 hours/day).

  • Visual acuity to read computer screens and documents.

A well-qualified candidate will also possess:

  • Advanced scientific programming skills using a variety of computer languages, including but not limited to Python, C, C++, and Fortran.

  • 5 years of research experience in computational geophysics or scientific computing or related field.

  • Advanced scientific computing and math skills.

  • Excellent writing skills through high-quality reports and publications.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Ability to positively and professionally interact with clients and staff, groups of various sizes.

  • Ability to orally comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning.

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected candidate's education and experience.

Special Note: This position is funded from grant and/or contract funding, which is renewed through provisions of the grantor of the contract. Therefore, this position is contingent upon continuation of funding from these grants and/or contracts, as well as satisfactory job performance.
