JOB SUMMARY:

This is a job that requires someone who is excited to develop new technologies and be at the start of a new scientific adventure. The job requires someone who is committed to maintaining the highest quality of work, who wants to contribute to new developments and who is excited about this new scientific adventure, The focus of this job is to develop and maintain cell culture facilities that are essential to the pre-clinical studies that are being carried out. This requires a commitment that is more than technical.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform high-quality molecular biology work, cell culture assays and perform other related duties and routine laboratory procedures as requested by the Principal Investigator.
  • Familiarity with viral generation protocol.
  • Compile and enter data into the designated database system, generate reports, conduct preliminary data interpretation, design spreadsheet algorithms to automate and/or simplify data reduction, and generate and assemble tables or graphs of processed data.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain laboratory infrastructure as necessary.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

80% of time directly involved in technical research details

20% of time involved in infrastructure maintenance.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with the operation and/or maintenance of high-end instrumentation and microscopy related to the cell culture facility.
  • Knowledge of cell culture and sterile techniques, biochemical analysis and basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience in virus maintenance and infection models.
  • Must have core facility research knowledge
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use discretion and good judgment in a variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Working knowledge of Windows programs and applications, specialized databases pertinent to the university, and e-mail communication
  • Ability to read and comprehend various forms, documentation, files and information in the department.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:

The functions of the position usually performed sitting, but may require some amount of time standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, computer software applications, and calculator, involve extensive wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

  • Master's degree in Biochemistry, biology or related field;
  • Or a Bachelor's degree in the above disciplines with experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting.
