Job Description

NREL is currently seeking an experienced Senior Software Development Lead to join our Ruby on Rails development team. This is a customer facing position that will interact regularly with product owners, scrum masters, project managers, stakeholders and end-users alike. The applications we build support the laboratory’s operations in support of our mission of advancing the science and engineering of energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power technologies.  This candidate will play a critical role in the design and development of custom solutions as well as team building and mentorship.

Technically, the candidate has deep technical knowledge of all layers in a Ruby on Rails n-tier solution, relational database concepts, test frameworks, and has experience designing and operating in a services-oriented architecture.

From a leadership perspective, the candidate embraces Agile principles, is committed to providing a physiologically safe atmosphere for the team to evolve in a collaborative fashion, mentors junior team members and actively participates in at least one community of practice relevant to the team.

Merging technical and leadership aspects, the candidate anticipates issues and deals with them proactively, has an emphasis on business solutions development, is a team player with the ability to influence and negotiate.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive IS expertise and has full knowledge of related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Superior leadership and project management skills. Skilled in analytical techniques, practices and problem solving. Extensive architecture and design for various computer software programs and information systems.

* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

5 or more years’ experience in the following:

  • Holding a senior-level or lead-level role leveraging full-stack Ruby on Rails development.
  • Developing commercial quality web applications.
  • Extensive use of HTML, AJAX, JavaScript, SASS, jQuery, Materialize, Bootstrap.
  • Working with relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, Oracle etc.

3 or more year’s experience in the following:

  • Front-end experience with css/sass.
  • Expert-level Git, Jenkins and Jira.
  • Understanding and use of at least two Agile frameworks.
