The role
We are looking for a Freelance Art Director to join our internal creative team within the SoFi marketing department. SoFi is a major player in the sports marketing game: we’re the Official Bank of the NBA, Official Bank of the LA Rams and LA Chargers, presenting Sponsor of TGL, naming rights partner of SoFi Stadium, and we’ve worked with star athletes in a variety of professional and college sports. Now, we’re looking for the newest addition to our creative lineup to help us thread the needle between sports and finance.
Our ideal candidate is someone who lives and breathes sports. Not only do you have a passion for the game itself, but you also have a FYP full of fan takes, tunnel fits, or trick shots. Here at SoFi, you’ll be responsible for making more of the sports-centric content you love, for a variety of channels—from broadcast, to physical activations, to video and images for our various owned and paid social platforms (including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X, Reddit, and our private Facebook group of over 50,000 passionate SoFi members).
You’ll work with copywriters, strategists, motion designers, and other creatives to come up with standout concepts for our sports partnerships, then bring them to life with stellar design and art direction. You’ll also be an integral part of production, from art directing wardrobe for primetime TV commercials, to helping us produce shot-lists for our production crew, or discussing color and composition with our in-house production studio.
You might be wondering, “What will set me apart from the other candidates?” We’re looking for a strong communicator who can express ideas clearly—not just on the page (or screen), but also in presentations and brainstorm sessions—and then execute with excellence. And if photography, videography, editing, animation, or all the above are also part of your repertoire, you’ll have a chance to put them to use. Our ultimate goal is to make incredible SoFi content that excites people to work toward getting their money right, and it’s your job to make the content that’ll get them to stop their scroll.
What you’ll do:
- Brainstorm sports marketing ideas for 360 platforms, activations, videos, social, banners, OOH, landing pages, and more.
- Work collaboratively to develop sports-centric content for both special events, campaigns, and day-to-day posting.
- Concept and execute new ideas for game-changing, thumb-stopping campaigns and properties.
- Collaborate with strategy, product, and even our certified financial planners to bring SoFi’s unique perspective on personal finance to a rapidly growing audience.
- Iterate on high-performing ways to consistently drive acquisition in paid social.
- Live and breathe social media, keeping up with the latest trends and constantly trying to one-up other best-in-class brands.
- Maintain SoFi visual guidelines while creating graphics, illustration, and imagery that delight and get people to react, engage, and share.
- Partner with a copywriter to sell ideas and bring them to life.
- Anything else you can dream of—seriously, we’re open to your ideas.
What you’ll need:
- Sports knowledge. You should have a deep understanding of a variety of sports, specifically basketball, football, and golf, and especially fan culture.
- Ability to both concept and execute—you’ll have to dream big, then go make it happen with minimal oversight and sometimes limited resources.
- Experience with current social best practices—you have an inherent grasp on what works, what’s exciting, and what’s old news.
- Comfortable tackling a range of content, from straightforward tweets to big-budget long-form video content.
- Expert multi-tasking and time management.
- Sense of urgency—you want to go, move, make things happen, and shake things up.
- Ability to understand technical content and quickly learn new material.
- Knowledge of financial services/personal finance a plus.
