About the role

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design, prototyping, and validation of robot actuators. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure our custom actuators and systems meet the requirements for size, force, precision, speed, cost, and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Actuator Design & Engineering: Contribute towards development and architecture of high-force, high-speed, low-mass actuators.

  • Prototyping & Testing: Create detailed prototypes using CAD software and fabrication methods (3D printing, CNC, etc.) and conduct testing to validate design performance.

  • Analysis & Simulation: Perform mechanical simulations (FEA, CFD, etc.) to predict the behavior of actuators under various load conditions and optimize performance.

  • Material Selection: Determine the best materials and processes that balance durability, weight, and cost requirements.

  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for enhancements and collaborate with team members to implement improvements that boost reliability and performance.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with electrical engineering and firmware teams to ensure seamless integration of actuators into overall system architecture.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience

  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably involving small actuators, mechatronic systems, or precision mechanisms

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Onshape) and mechanical simulation tools (FEA, CFD, etc.)

    • Strong understanding of mechanical simulation tools (FEA, CFD, etc.)

    • Experience transitioning designs from prototypes to scalable manufacturing, including supply chain and production ramp-up.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong problem-solving abilities with a first-principles approach to complex challenges

    • Effective communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional teams

    • Passion for robotics and deep belief in our mission

  • Nice-to-Haves:

    • Experience with humanoid robotic hand or prosthetic hand design

    • Hands-on experience integrating sensors and control systems into mechanical design

    • Knowledge of emerging materials and novel actuator technologieses here
