About the role

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • The Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care for patients within an assigned unit of a hospital, in support of medical care as directed by medical staff and pursuant to objectives and policies of the hospital. They are responsible for total nursing care for all patients assigned to him/her by the Nurse Manager and/or Charge Nurse.

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to Nursing Supervisor

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Effectively prioritize direct admissions from physician offices/nursing facilities and direct admissions transfers from other hospitals.
  • Provides effective communication to patients/clients, their family members, team members, and other health care professionals to ensure an efficient patient transfer.
  • Obtain medical history from patients upon admission and complete initial assessment, patient profile, medication reconciliation, and initiates plan of care.
  • Must be able to utilize nursing skills for IV insertion and lab draws.
  • Admissions nurse will require acute hearing ability, i.e. assessing heart and lung sounds with stethoscope.
  • Admissions nurse will be able to correctly order any labs or radiology procedures.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Education: Graduate of approved School of Nursing
  • Experience: As required by department/unit
  • Technical Skills: As required by department/unit
  • License/Certification: Current Louisiana Registered Nurse license or Multi-state Compact License.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Admissions nurse requires walking long distances, standing for prolonged periods, bending, and lifting 50-100 pounds at a time.
  • Admissions nurse requires pushing and/or pulling patient in wheelchair.
  • The work environment may be physically confining.
  • Many nursing skills require acute hearing ability, i.e. listening with stethoscope to breath sounds and heart sounds.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
  • Establish rapport with families, patient, and healthcare team.
  • Respect and value cultural differences.
