Job Summary

The work of the Security Technician classification includes the following:  screening all passengers, their appurtenances in case of handicapped persons, and property intended to be carried in the cabin of the aircraft by weapon detecting procedures or facilities to prevent or deter the carriage of any explosive or incendiary device, weapon or other dangerous object on board an aircraft.  Visually monitors facilities and operations areas directly or through closed circuit television to prevent or deter unauthorized access to aircraft or sterile areas.  Checks tickets and tags on baggage for departures and, upon arrival at claim areas, matches claim checks with claimed baggage. May be assigned surveillance of loading of cargo and baggage, stores, commissary, etc. to aircraft.  Informs airline management or law enforcement officers of threats, jokes regarding arms, bombs, etc., and reports refusals by passengers to submit to screening and discovery of weapons or dangerous objects.  Denies passage beyond the screening point.  Performs exceptional screening, including personal frisk when assigned.  Operates, as required, walk-through metal detectors, handheld metal detectors and x-ray inspection systems; performs testing of detectors, checks proper functioning of TV monitors, and replaces/removes video tapes.  Comply with WFS site security procedures for assigned warehouse and other operations.  Remain cognizant of WFS staff, security contractors, and visitors’ activities and report security breaches, suspicious occurrences, or non-compliance with the site security plan to managers or via the WFS whistleblower program.

Responsibilities

Must be able to perform the following functions in variable environmental conditions:  

• Ability to stand for up to eight (8) hours per day.
• Ability to remain confined to work station for prolonged period of time.
• Ability to stoop, bend, reach, lift, twist, and turn.
• Must be willing to wear uniform and insignia as prescribed by the Company.
• Must be able to perform duties in a courteous, cautious, and efficient manner in a sometimes stressful environment.
• Must be able to communicate clearly, tactfully, and firmly to passengers.
• Cognitive skill to rapidly analyze what is reflected on  monitor.
• Must be able to see clearly in low light conditions.
• Must be able to handle occasionally irate, impudent or threatening passengers.
• Tolerate and answer repetitious remarks and questions from passengers.
• Cognitive skills to read and understand alpha and numeric codes.
• Cognitive skills to see, read and comprehend three letter city-pair codes.
• Reports to work on a regular and timely basis.
• Operate handheld metal detector while reaching, twisting, turning, and gripping.

Minimum Requirements

• HS Diploma, GED or Equivalent.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must be U.S. Citizen required if performing security screening function.
• Must undergo initial and recurrent training including self-instructions courses.
• Subject to random Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing if performing security screening function.

Preferred Skills

• Strong oral communication skills.
• Public contact experience preferred.
• Must pass physical examinations.
• Ability to work rotating shifts including weekends (i.e., Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), holidays, and days off.
• Ability to read, write, and fluently speak and understand the English language.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

• Ability to lift 75 -100 pounds.
