Red Hat’s Open Source Program Office (OSPO) within the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) is looking for a highly motivated, self-directed, and hands-on individual to lead community development for key security related open source projects and to align development efforts to emerging national and international standards in support of Red Hat’s strategy. We are looking for a person who has experience contributing to emerging standards, leading engagements with policy makers, a track record of high impact open source software contributions, and the ability to align business and customer needs with open source community efforts. Experience in developing open source business strategies and using metrics to evaluate success is important.

You’ll engage with both the users of and the developers of open source projects, advocating for the needs of the community while serving as a public face for projects. You’ll work with members of the Open Source Program Office, engineering, security teams, legal, and other stakeholders across Red Hat. Additionally, you will support teams interfacing with the public sector and multiple open source software communities.

This position requires 25% travel.  

What You’ll Do:

  • Monitor for and analyze global legislative and policy developments impacting open source communities

  • Collaborate with stakeholders, both within and outside of Red Hat, to help advocate for policies that promote secure and sustainable, open source practices that benefit our whole industry and advance the technology

  • Help Red Hat to educate policymakers on the benefits and challenges of open source software in a security and regulatory context

  • Collaborate with Product Security to develop resources and enablement materials to promote secure open source development and upstream engagement best practices

  • Identify upstream communities germane to the success of the Red Hat Security strategy to ensure they have appropriate vitality and level of participation

  • Support the Office of the CTO in defining the Red Hat technology vision and accelerate bringing it to life through the use of prototyping 

  • Work with multiple stakeholder teams to map and rationalize Red Hat’s community commitments in key, security-related open source projects aligned to Red Hat’s strategy

  • Work with our engineering, legal, security, communications, product, and recruiting teams to turn security related contributions into powerful stories that demonstrate the strength of open source

  • Cultivate our open source presence and reputation in security related open source organizations, standards bodies, and more

  • Partner with various teams – including corporate communications, events, consulting, developer, product, and partner marketing – to ensure successful and targeted execution of various community outreach activities including events, social media, web content, and more

What You’ll Bring

  • Familiarity with current global legislative landscape regarding open source software

  • Familiarity with software development standards organizations

  • Familiarity with the security software space and the ability to deepen understanding of the landscape quickly

  • Experience with software development in open source communities, and an understanding of secure software development processes germane to open source

  • Experience with software supply chain security, network security, red-teaming, vulnerability management, and incident response

  • Experience with Linux-based developer tools, including continuous integration, containers, and cloud-native technologies in general

  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills – and a desire to continually improve them

  • Good organizational skills and the ability to effectively work with your manager and other internal stakeholders to prioritize work associated with both short- and long-term goals

  • Experience motivating volunteers and staff is a definite plus
