The Principal Solution Architect designs and guides the implementation of complex, enterprise-wide technology solutions supporting Dell Medical School’s evolving academic health enterprise. This role provides architectural leadership across clinical, research, operational, administrative, and facility technology environments, including EHR and ERP platforms, medical devices, biomedical equipment, imaging systems, clinical technologies, cloud infrastructure, and other integrated solutions.

Purpose

The Principal Solution Architect designs and guides the implementation of complex, enterprise-wide technology solutions. This role transforms strategic vision into actionable roadmaps and mobilizes cross-functional teams by building strong coalitions across the institution.

The Principal Solution Architect leads requirements development activities, drives technology portfolio cataloging and optimization, translates business requirements into technical solutions, delivers global and local solution designs for key initiatives, and provides architectural oversight of project execution. This position plays a critical role in evaluating emerging technologies, integrating clinical and administrative systems, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and standards. The Principal Solution Architect works directly with leadership and staff throughout the technology organization, as well as with research and clinical leaders.

Responsibilities

Leads Enterprise Solution Design

  • Translate institutional vision into tangible architectural roadmaps and actionable designs.

  • Develop solution and integration architecture between EHR platforms, ERP, digital technologies, medical devices, imaging systems, facilities, and IT transformation initiatives.

  • Develop architecture standards and integration patterns for medical devices, biomedical equipment, clinical monitoring systems, and IoT-enabled healthcare technologies.

  • Design secure, scalable, and interoperable technology solutions that optimize clinical workflows, caregiver experiences, and patient outcomes across inpatient, ambulatory, and research environments.

  • Establish architecture principles and an escalation model for resolving project-level disagreements.

  • Support technology planning, design, activation, and operational readiness activities for new healthcare facilities and care environments.

  • Deliver solution architectures to support human health research and hospital build initiatives.

Drives Technology Strategy and Road Mapping

  • Develop and maintain the architecture and technology roadmap aligned with platform milestones.

  • Map and triage current technology solutions across UT Medical Center, main campus, and research teams.

  • Develop long-term roadmaps for clinical technology integration, device interoperability, and intelligent hospital operations.

  • Evaluate new technology requests for platform strategy fit and vendor viability.

  • Identify opportunities to leverage device-generated clinical data to improve care delivery, operational performance, and health system analytics.

  • Produce executive-level presentation materials to communicate roadmap and platform strategy.

Collaborates with Stakeholders and Builds Coalitions

  • Collaborate with facility planners, designers, and construction partners.

  • Engage with clinical, operational, biomedical services, research, and administrative leaders to define medical technology requirements and integration priorities.

  • Build institutional coalitions to drive adoption of architectural standards and strategic initiatives.

  • Facilitate design workshops and solution reviews across departments.

  • Communicate architectural decisions and roadmaps to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Lead change across short- and long-term objectives in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.

Establishes Architecture Governance and Standards

  • Define and enforce architectural principles, standards, and templates.
