General Description and Classification

Performs the layout and installation of traffic control markings, the fabrication of traffic control signs, and/or the installation of traffic control signs to ensure roadway safety. Duties include but are not limited to determining appropriate signage and roadway easement location; installing, recycling, replacing traffic signs; painting crosswalks, stop bars, and fabricating signs; pavement marking by various equipment and machines; interpreting work orders and associated blueprints; barricading for road closures per GDOT standards.

 

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision. Receives assignments, determines method, and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

 

Essential Duties 

Operates pavement marking equipment such as small, medium, and long line paint stripers, pre-melters, bituminous machines, pavement markings grinder, thermoplastic machines, and generators to apply traffic control markings on roadways per work orders and blueprints according to GDOT standards.

Loads maintains, and repairs road marking equipment such as small, medium, and long line paint stripers, pre-melters, bituminous machines, pavement markings grinder, thermoplastic machines, and generators to ensure proper operation of equipment.

Selects traffic control signs, determines appropriate sign locations, and installs signs on roadway easements.

Operates equipment such as squeeze and roller sheet applicators, electric/hydraulic die cutters, computerized graphic printers/plotters, and hot ovens to fabricate traffic control signs and street markers.

Fabricates roadway signs; uses interstate machining and pressure-sensitive application according to GDOT standards; selects proper sign blanks, uses a ruler/tape measure to layout sign details, and applies sign detail to blank.

Interprets work orders and associated blueprints, draws sketches, and calculates measurements to determine materials needed.

Sets up barricades for road closures per GDOT standards.

Manages citizen complaints; evaluates and forwards citizens’ complaints, compiles reports, and attends meetings to receive and disseminate information.

Drives pickup trucks to and from work sites, loads and unloads supplies and equipment, and performs minor safety and operational checks.

None. May oversee temporary or contract workers as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
 

Knowledge of: the English language with the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and posted schedules; of the GDOT Traffic Standards applicable to the application of roadway markings, sign fabrication, sign installation, or road closures; of the operation and maintenance of roadway marking, sign fabrication, or sign installation equipment; of the preparation and application of materials used to mark roadways and fabricate signs; of high school level mathematics; of basic drafting symbols and terminology.

Skill in the use of computer, Microsoft Office, and proprietary signal systems software; in operating and performing minor repairs on tools and equipment used in traffic service control; in using sign installation tools and equipment such as wrenches, post hole diggers, core drilling machine, and signpost extractors, electric saws, and jackhammers; in identifying discrepancies between blueprint or work order dimensions and actual road dimensions.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Human relations skills are required to effectively communicate with the public, elected officials, members of boards and commissions, department heads, other employees of the city, and employees of other government agencies.

Ability to: perform under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency; to work a rotating shift which may involve an erratic work schedule with some holiday, weekend, and overtime work required; to perform on-call duties with a maximum response time of thirty (30) minutes from personal residence under ordinary travel conditions; to appear for work on time and competently perform essential functions and job responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner to meet scheduled deadlines and to restore desired traffic operations in a timely and accurate manner; to correctly establish safety and traffic priorities in emergencies.
