Job Description:
Staff Technical Writer
We are seeking a skilled Staff Technical Writer to join the writing team that develops user documentation for the VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) division. The writer will be working with the NSX (network virtualization and security) component team.
You will work with a talented team of writers, developers, and product designers to document products and solutions that provide a software-defined approach to networking that extends across data centers, clouds, and application frameworks. This Staff Technical Writer position provides a unique opportunity to develop and grow your networking documentation expertise, while also having an impact on the product user experience through collaboration with product designers.

- You enjoy building relationships with your peers in engineering and product management (among others) to enhance your knowledge of the product and its customers.
- You are an active user of the product that you are documenting, and your broad and deep view of the user experience makes you an excellent customer advocate.
- You understand the technical writing process, possess the technical expertise to explain complex technical concepts to an administrator audience, and have superb communication, leadership, and project planning skills.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with developers, product managers, and other writers to create and revise existing technical content (release notes, user and administration guides, on-screen text) in a fast-paced environment.
- Write for a range of customers, including new and experienced operators and administrators in the security space.
- Research writing assignments using a variety of sources including functional specifications, product requirements documents, using the feature, reviewing issues, analyzing customer feedback, and interviewing subject matter experts.
- Ensure compliance with documentation styles and standards.
- Work as part of a distributed, global team in a dynamic environment.
- Collaborate with other writing teams to develop comprehensive user documentation that spans different products.
- Develop technical documentation using DITA tools.
Required Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of technical writing fundamentals, industry standard writing styles, and content organization.
- Ability to learn complex concepts quickly and explain them with clarity and technical accuracy.
- Ability to establish rapport and working relationships with a variety of personalities.
- Strong logical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of technical writing fundamentals, industry standard writing styles, and content organization.
- Detail-oriented with a high sense of responsibility for outcomes, and passion about the impact of what you develop.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and cooperatively with others.
- Ability to remain calmly focused and persistent under pressure.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Highly dependable and flexible regarding work hours and critical coverage.
- Adept at structured documentation development and knowledgeable about DITA standards and best practices.
- B.A./B.S. in a Technical Discipline and/or English /Technical Communications or 4 years equivalent in a related field and 8+ years related work experience OR Masters with 6+ years related work experience
Desired Qualifications
- Experience documenting networking and security products.
- Technical Communications degree.
- Experience using Jira, Confluence, and working in an agile development environment.
Nice to Haves
- Usability testing experience.
- Experience developing how-to videos.
Screening
- A technical writing exam or submission of technical writing examples may be required as a part of the interview process.
