ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Staff Accountant, Revenue & Cash Reconciliations in the Finance Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
Responsible for safeguarding the financial resources of the organization, the Finance team manages the financial activities of the National ACLU. From paying vendors to forecasting budgets, and everything in-between, we take pride in providing the resources and platform for informed financial decision-making.
This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Reporting to the Assistant Controller, Revenue & Investments, the Staff Accountant, Revenue & Cash Reconciliations, is responsible for performing specific accounting functions in accordance with ACLU standard procedures, and GAAP, regulations and industry best practices. YOUR DAY TO DAY
The following overview of responsibilities is intended to describe the type of work which will be assigned to this position. It is not an exhaustive list of all specific duties required by the employee:
General Accounting Operations
- Provide excellent customer service by providing timely, thorough, and friendly responses to internal and external stakeholder inquiries
- Perform account reconciliations relevant to functional area, ensuring their accuracy and proper documentation for internal and external reporting purposes
- Assist in the preparation of audit schedules and materials; help ensure timely submission of deliverables
- Collaborate with the team to ensure that accounting policies and procedures align with GAAP and best industry practices
- Complete ad hoc reports and projects as requested by the accounting team
Functional Area: Revenue & Receivables
- Assist in recording monthly revenue details, ensuring that all income is accurately reflected in the general ledger
- Record donations and grants, including pledges, bequests, and payments of cash and stock
- Assist in the recording and reconciliation of non-donation income (e.g., vendor credits, reimbursements, legal awards, property rental income, list rental income, store sales, miscellaneous income)
- Ensure revenue reports are aligned with cash reconciliations and that data feeds from the donor database to the accounting system are accurate and provide necessary detail
- Assist with the annual revenue reconciliation process, including preparing and recording journal entries, submitting affiliate payment requests, and monitoring receivables from affiliates
- Collaborate monthly with Revenue Operations and Development stakeholders on reconciling revenue items
Functional Area: Cash
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for cash accounts, investigating reconciling items and ensuring that any unrecorded activities are brought to stakeholder’s attention
- Monitor and reconcile cash suspense accounts monthly, communicate open items to the appropriate team members for resolution, and prepare necessary adjusting entries as required
- Create and/or modify and distribute periodic cash management reports, including daily balance and weekly change reports, among others
- Assist on the revenue recognition workflow process as it relates to the cash reconciliations, to include utilizing information from the gift processing reports
- Assist with managing daily cash balances to ensure working capital is optimally invested
