Position Summary

The Orthopedic Spine Nurse Practitioner at Washington University Orthopedics is an integral member and vital leader within the interdisciplinary Orthopedic Spine team and works in the outpatient clinical setting across the St. Charles, Barnes West County, and Missouri Baptist locations in St. Louis. This role requires leadership skills that inspire and motivate staff, as well as the adaptability to navigate changing priorities and protocols to ensure optimal patient care. Washington University Orthopedics Spine Surgery Clinical Care operates Monday through Friday.

This position offers a unique opportunity to first assist in the operating room, while the remainder of the time is spent in the outpatient setting.

The Spine Nurse Practitioner facilitates the multidisciplinary care of spine patients from adolescents through adulthood with the goals of exceptional care, patient experience, and clinical outcomes. Your ability to foster collaboration among team members and facilitate effective communication between patients and healthcare providers will significantly enhance the delivery of care.

In this position, you will manage orthopedic staff across multiple locations, guiding and supporting your team in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care. By working closely with hospital partners, Spine leadership, and physician teams, you will help improve access and throughput while ensuring comprehensive management of spine patients. The Spine Nurse Practitioner will also improve patient preparedness for treatment through education, review of clinical needs, and support, while facilitating interaction between patients, their physician team, and referrals as appropriate.

Provides healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a physician; conducts complete physicals, provides treatment, and counsels patients; may, in some instances, prescribe medication.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs physical assessments/examinations.
  • Assesses and counsels patients and obtains medical histories.
  • Monitors patient's adherence to protocols.
  • Coordinates screening for research studies.
  • Collects and records data per research requirements and guidelines.
  • Develops and implements adherence plans used with protocols.
  • Bills for professional services as permitted by the collaborative practice agreement.
  • Interprets diagnostic tests results for deviations from normal.
  • Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval.
  • Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram and laboratory test.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care and infection management.
  • Provides physicians with assistance during surgery or complicated medical procedures.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in service meetings and workshops.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objective, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
