Description

Overview
The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers (CSW) is an internationally renowned fellowship program at The New York Public Library (NYPL), open to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building—including academics, independent scholars, and creative writers. CSW appoints 15 Fellows each year for a nine-month term at NYPL, from September through May. In addition to working on their own projects, the Fellows engage in ongoing exchanges of ideas within the Center and in public forums throughout the Library. The Staff Associate assists with all aspects of CSW public programs and presentations, supports Cullman Center social media activity, and manages the Center’s practical daily office needs.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Interim Deputy Director (IDD) of the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers (CSW), the Staff Associate will:
  • Assist the IDD with the planning and presenting of public programs and Cullman Center lunch talks
  • Serve as a CSW liaison with Facilities and Security regarding all CSW functions
  • Manage Fellows’ research activities, questions, and concerns, including NYPL support services, online access, and computer troubleshooting
  • Provide the IDD and Access Services group with steady feedback about problems with essential discovery and delivery
  • Serve as the primary contact for all CSW related questions regarding the Fellowship and Fellowship applications, the Teacher’s Institute, and CSW evening programs
  • Assist with CSW social media, draft content about Fellows and events, and monitor activities of current and former Fellows’ publications, awards, and readings
  • Manage daily administration of CSW: ordering supplies and meals, performing office upkeep, and providing general administrative support 
  • Work with IDD to monitor CSW budget and spending in WorkDay
  • Gather, enter, and analyze departmental records and databases, as appropriate; establishes and maintains files and records for the office
  • Performs other assigned duties as necessary

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Arts or Humanities
Required Experience
  • 1+ years relevant work experience in publishing, media, events, or administration
Required Skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Computer fluency and related technology skills, including experience with Google Suite or Microsoft Office
  • Ability to take initiative, self-start, and follow through 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal staff and external partners
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiar with social media or content creation
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of contemporary media and publishing marketplace
  • Ability to be thoughtful and exercise good judgement when working with colleagues and external partners
