Project Overview:
The Carbon Black Concrete Project is an innovative research initiative focused on incorporating carbon black into concrete for enhanced performance and sustainability. This project is in collaboration with the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The aim is to develop new concrete formulations with improved mechanical properties, durability, and lower carbon footprints.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in characterizing and optimizing carbon black-modified concrete. The research will involve advanced materials characterization techniques, concrete manufacturing processes, and performance testing under various environmental conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct detailed materials characterization using techniques such as SEM, XRD, TGA, and FTIR to analyze carbon black interactions with cementitious matrices.
- Develop and refine manufacturing methods for carbon black incorporation into concrete, including mixing protocols, curing processes, and scalability assessments.
- Evaluate the mechanical and durability performance of carbon black concrete through
comprehensive testing (compressive strength, flexural strength, freeze-thaw resistance, etc.). - Collaborate closely with ACI and VDOT to ensure research aligns with industry standards and practical applications.
- Prepare high-quality research publications and present findings at national and international conferences.
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in the project.
Join Us:
Be part of a cutting-edge research project that aims to revolutionize the concrete industry with sustainable and high-performance materials. Your work will directly contribute to advancing the field and shaping future construction practices.

Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field with a focus on cementitious materials and concrete technology.
- Strong background in materials characterization techniques, particularly for cement-based composites.
- Experience in concrete manufacturing, including mixing design, curing, and large-scale production methods.
- Familiarity with industry standards for concrete testing and performance evaluation.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a strong publication record.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
Additional Considerations
As delineated above.
