Role Summary
The Sr. Hardware Engineer will develop and lead all PCB/ECU hardware design activities on Magna’s New Mobility projects. The senior engineer interfaces with multiple stakeholders to understand requirements, domain, viable technology, and development activities for automotive ECU development projects and control/safety strategies. For design activities, the Sr. Hardware Engineer must be capable of creating and analyzing multiple design alternatives, assessing such alternatives based on given or self-defined criteria, and selecting the most suitable options to refine to a final design. The engineer is aware of safety, security and regulatory requirements and takes these into design considerations.
Key Responsibilities
- Hardware design responsible for various electronic control units (ECU) within the New Mobility group. Expertise with ECUs such as Connectivity, Gateways, Vehicle Controller, Motor controller
- Design and create electrical schematics and PCB layout using industry standard tools and best practices
- Responsible to lead research, design and development of electronics for new, existing programs in compliance with automotive standards and customer specifications from concept development to production launch.
- Provides technical guidance for system design and integration engineering activities. Ensures conceptual integrity of system design.
- Prepares Statement of Work (SOW) for engineering services related to ECU hardware development. Project management of sourced electronic designs.
- Experience with 5G connectivity, Wifi, Bluetooth, vehicle supervisory controller and Autonomous driving systems are required
- Be the main point of contact for electrical designs. Interface with cross-functional departments, suppliers, and customer with respect to electronic product development, validations and manufacturing
- Provide technical advice for product/systems roadmap definition based on expert knowledge of ECU specific technologies and customer use cases.
Key Responsibilities (Cont.)
- Develop and test prototypes to ensure design intent and specifications are satisfied.
- Ensure electrical designs and layouts meet EMC, Environmental, and performance requirements
- Conducting schematic level circuit simulation for continuous improvement of designs
- Create electrical and EMC design validation test plans according to customer requirements. Get customer approvals.
- Oversees and supports life cycle engineering activities using defined processes and standards.
- Participates in internal and external technical reviews, as required.
- Actively pursues cost saving ideas and achieving Bill of Material (BOM) targets
- Be aware of innovative solutions and propose patent applications.
- Perform work assignments as a highly competent hardware Engineer, requiring independent development and testing of the electronic components
- Performs other duties as necessary in support of business objectives. Ensures that facilities are in full compliance with all safety regulations.
- Follows safe work procedures; Uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE); Uses workplace tools and equipment as instructed; Reports workplace hazards, injuries and illness as soon as possible following event.
- Works with senior engineering personnel to support and drive best practices in design specifications, manufacturing processes, customer requirements, and safety requirements.
Key Qualifications/Requirements
- 4-8 years’ relevant experience regarding the Responsibility / Activities (listed above) for automotive electronics serial development projects (mandatory).
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience (Master’s preferred)
- Must have detailed electronic component knowledge.
- Must have experience with Microprocessor/Microcontroller based designs.
- Knowledge of Electronic manufacturing, quality and technical standards (IPC, ISO, etc.)
