Under the direction of Project Director, serve as instrument scientist in the development of an ion instrument for space weather. Typical duties include simulation of ion optics, functional testing and calibration of the instrument, interpretation of test results, participating in other testing activities, documenting procedures and results, presentation of results.
Duties/Responsibilities
Instrument testing (50%)
Participate in the planning, organization and execution of instrument test campaigns:
Identify goals for the test.
Determine procedures/test plans.
Participate in data collection.
Analyze test results.
Instrument simulation (20%)
Perform ion optics simulations to predict and validate instrument test results.
Software Development (10%)
Developing software for data analysis.
Presentation and Documentation (20%)
Present weekly status to the UNH team.
Participate in preparation and presentation for NASA-led project reviews. These include bi-monthly Program Management Reviews, as well as the formal design reviews, the pre-environmental review and the pre-ship review.
Prepare and contribute to required NASA documentation. These include contributions to Performance Verification Plans, Procedures, and Reports, and Calibration Plans, Procedures, and Reports.
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
Doctorate or equivalent professional degree in science, with doctoral research closely related to the project work; or Master’s degree in physics with at least three years of closely related research experience.
Knowledge of computer programming and data analysis techniques.
Experience in space instrument design and testing.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of space plasma instrumentation
Knowledge of software development
Knowledge of general physics lab skills
Good organization skills
Good communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Physics or related field.
