About the role

The Physical Therapist I will evaluate patients using knowledge of the principals and methods of patient assessment and ongoing reassessment. The PT I will help people with disabilities, injuries or illness recover and cope through skilled physical therapy interventions to a diverse patient population. The PT I works under the supervision of the therapy Director / Manager / Senior Physical Therapist and is part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Performs initial examinations, selects appropriate assessment tests and measures, establishes appropriate goals, plans and implements treatment interventions, performs timely re-examinations and modifies goals and treatment interventions accordingly. Coordinates with other disciplines when indicated.

2. Provides treatment interventions to patients/clients that are safe, timely, effective, efficient, patient-centered, and equitable, in compliance with organizational policies and procedures.

3. Assumes responsibility for all documentation requirements in a timely manner, i.e., initial examinations, progress notes, and discharge summaries.

4. Provides training to families, caregivers, or medical personnel as indicated.

5. Recommends appropriate durable medical equipment in coordination with appropriate team members. Writes letters of medical necessity when indicated.

6. Participates in discharge planning, makes recommendations for continued physical therapy and provides home exercise programs when appropriate.

7. Communicates findings with physicians and team in a prompt manner.

8. Coordinates and adjusts schedule according to department needs.

9. Maintains department productivity expectations.

10. Attends all appropriate conferences, rounds, in services and meetings.

11. Will be assigned additional patients in the event that coverage is necessary as dictated by staffing needs.

12. Participates in the supervision of PT Assistants, Mobility Aids, volunteers, and students.

13. Participates in the development of other staff members and in their training, as assigned.

14. Serves as a clinical instructor to students and participates in student lecture development.

15. Follows all MSM/MSW policies and procedures.

16. May be required to perform other duties as assigned or perform other duties when necessary. Identifies and provides appropriate strategies to educate patients so that environmental constraints, learning barriers, and cultural factors are addressed effectively.

17. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria.

18. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills for age specific population such as: Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric.

a. Identifies physical, behaviors and emotional characteristic typical for the age group.

b. Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment

c. Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs

d. Uses communication techniques which are age appropriate.

 

Organizational/Managerial

1. Participates in the department’s performance improvement activities.

2. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.

3. Observes the Health Care System’s compliance policies.

4. Assists in maintenance of appropriate supply and inventory for the department.

5. Enters patient billing information daily and records statistical data.

6. Demonstrates organizational and time management skills necessary to complete the assigned duties.

 

Educational/Professional development

1. Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements.

2. Identifies learning strengths and needs.

3. Utilizes learning resources.

4. Plans and participates in in-service educational programs.

5. Attend a minimum of 2 continuing education courses per year; presents an in-service on them to the staff.

6. Adheres to specific department dress code and hospital dress code.

7. Adheres to department hours.

8. During work hours performs those duties only relating to the department.

9. Adheres to department policies on attendance, sick days, vacation and personal time.

10. Practices competently in accordance with professional practice standards and expectations.

 

Communication/ Relationships

1. Demonstrates a professional, courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others.

2. Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.

3. Effectively relates patients’ status and progress to other health professionals.
