The New York FarmNet Program with the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, supports farm families and agricultural businesses by providing financial and family/personal consulting to improve the farm business and family communications.

Our Family Consultant Openings:

New York FarmNet is actively recruiting for part-time family consultants in the Oneonta, NY area.

This is a temporary, non-benefits eligible, 19 hours or less per week temporary position with an annual reappointment based on job performance as well as approval and funding availability. The hourly pay rate is $32.50. Flexible scheduling is available for this position.

Family Consultants provide initial assessments to clients who request support to assist in identifying problems within a farm family or agricultural business. Consultants assist clients by guiding them to identify and prioritize solutions based on needs and assisting in developing and enacting an action plan. Skills required include active listening, motivational interviewing, and needs/problem assessment. In this position, NY FarmNet Family Consultants may also connect farm families with local agencies that can provide alternative solutions in challenging situations. Consultants will work remotely and will be required to travel to farms to set up in person meetings with clients.

Additional key responsibilities for the Family Consultant include:

  • Providing timely response to phone messages or e-mails so cases can be assigned appropriately. The client requesting services from NY FarmNet is to be contacted by phone within 24 hours of the case assignment to obtain preliminary information and arrange for a meeting (phone/video conference, face to face) as deemed necessary by the consultant.
  • Maintaining records of services provided to farm families. Timely and accurately detailed case notes must be entered into the NY FarmNet database after each meeting.
  • Attending training and professional development, provided by NY FarmNet as three in-service training session a year, generally in spring, summer, and fall. Consultants are also expected to seek out and participate in outside professional development opportunities related to their responsibilities, with consultation and approval of NY FarmNet office staff.
  • Engaging with local communities through program outreach such as hosting a booth at a farm show, making a brief program presentation at a local agency or business, or collaborating with agri-service providers on making a workshop presentation.

Required Qualifications:

  • An MSW, LCSW, Master’s in Counseling, Master’s in Psychology, or equivalent degree/certification.
  • Significant, successful experience working with clients on communications skills, interpersonal relationships, goal setting, and/or addiction, family, and mental health counseling.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Zoom, Microsoft Word, Excel, and the ability to learn data entry into the FarmNet database.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the state. Travel time is paid and reimbursed at the IRS mileage rate.
  • Experience in agriculture or agribusiness is preferred.
