Software Engineer - Digital Experience
American ExpressAbout the role
Description
At American Express, our culture is built on a 175-year history of innovation, shared values and Leadership Behaviors, and an unwavering commitment to back our customers, communities, and colleagues. As part of Team Amex, you'll experience this powerful backing with comprehensive support for your holistic well-being and many opportunities to learn new skills, develop as a leader, and grow your career.
Here, your voice and ideas matter, your work makes an impact, and together, you will help us define the future of American Express.
How will you make an impact in this role?
This role sits within the Digital Experience Tracking and User Consent Management team, which safeguards American Express from regulatory and reputational risks related to data privacy, security, and compliance. The team owns the development and operations of the enterprise tag management infrastructure - including client-side and server-side tag orchestration, consent enforcement workflows, and script lifecycle governance.
As a Software Engineer II, you will help evolve our privacy and tracking infrastructure across global markets governed by GDPR, CCPA, and Quebec privacy laws. You will contribute to and improve systems that manage how scripts are deployed, monitored, and evaluated for ongoing compliance. This includes contributing to our AI-driven JavaScript analysis platform for automated compliance reviews (PCI-DSS, GDPR, internal data standards), as well as helping maintain real-time data pipelines for telemetry, consent auditing, and risk detection.
You'll work in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment focused on cloud-native, scalable engineering - leveraging technologies such as OpenShift, GCP, Kubernetes, Kafka, Golang, and Java. Your contributions will directly impact customer trust, system reliability, and Amex's standing with global regulatory bodies.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of distributed services supporting tag delivery, consent enforcement, and risk monitoring.
- Build and evolve systems for real-time tracking event ingestion, privacy signal routing, and client-server synchronization.
- Partner with Product, Privacy, InfoSec, and Legal teams to integrate policy enforcement into platform capabilities.
- Support the lifecycle of third-party scripts, including change detection, compliance scanning, and automated alerting.
- Extend our internal AI/ML models for JavaScript review by helping improve model integration, pipeline reliability, and feedback loops.
- Build observability into all systems, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and actionable alerting.
- Contribute to cloud infrastructure automation and CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Terraform, and Docker.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in backend or full-stack software engineering roles, preferably in cloud-native or distributed environments.
- Strong programming skills in Golang, Java, and JavaScript, with production-level experience building services or APIs.
- Experience with Kafka, Pub/Sub, or other event-driven architectures.
- Familiarity with privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA, etc.) and the ability to translate policy into technical implementation. <
