About the role

Job Description The Research Assistant (Term) will have two key responsibilities. First, the research assistant will assist with design and validation of the biological activity of siRNA sequences in cultured cells (50% of their time). Second, the research assistant will assist with rat intrathecal surgeries and outcome measure assessments, including tissue analyses.   The Lippmann Lab in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Vanderbilt University seeks candidates to fill a research assistant position. The lab's mission is to model, understand, and treat neurodegeneration using multidisciplinary approaches spanning engineering, neuroscience, and regenerative medicine. Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment. There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends.
  Duties and Responsibilities

Molecular and cellular biological analyses

  • Cell culture
  • Transfections
  • RNA extraction
  • qRT-PCR

Animal work

  • Assist with rat intrathecal injections (animal preparation, compound injection)
  • Perform checks on animal welfare
  • Assist with necropsy and dissection
  • Perform outcome measure assessments on tissue samples
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., engineering, biology, biochemistry) is required.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills are required.
  • Diligence along with the ability and desire to maintain high quality records and safety standards are required.
  • Experience in standard molecular biology techniques is strongly preferred.
