Job Description

AECOM is seeking an Entry-Level Environmental Scientist to be based in our Germantown, Maryland office. This position will support our Remediation team within our Environment business line.

This position is expected to begin June 2024.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

The Entry-Level Environmental Scientist will support our Risk Assessment team and primarily focus on Federal projects. The successful candidate will assist with a variety of challenging projects including data management, site investigations, risk assessment, and remediation. They will assist with gathering and analyzing environmental data in both the field and office settings.

The responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Collects, interprets, and records data; conducts analyses; and compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance. 
  • Learn and perform human health and ecological risk assessment tasks in accordance with regulatory guidance and project-specific work plans.
  • Learn and maintain work quality, quantity, and efficiency at or above company standards.
  • Utilizes scientific principles, theories, practices, and existing technologies to develop technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
  • Conducts analysis and investigation work obtained from a variety of sources.
  • Providing field services for site investigation; soil, air, and groundwater sample collection; and related work.
  • Provide office support for data management and report preparation.
  • Must demonstrate a professional demeanor in written and verbal communications with clients, regulatory officials, and fellow employees. Candidate must also be able to work as part of a project team comprised of AECOM staff and subcontractors.
  • Flexibility to work on a multitude of diverse projects, a positive attitude, and commitment to workplace health and safety are imperative.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Toxicology, Biology, Geology, or a related field of study.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices. 
  • As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review.
  • Due to the nature of work, U.S. Citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience supporting/performing human health risk assessment calculations in an environmental consulting setting.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Knowledge of EPA risk assessment guidance.
  • Knowledge of vapor intrusion assessment, statistics, or ecological risk assessment.
  • Detail oriented and still able to understand/comply with the big picture/goals of a project.
  • Self-learner with the ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexible – can adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Take direction from project/task managers.

Additional Information

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes in office work in Germantown, MD.  The selected candidate must be available to work in Germantown, MD on a scheduled basis.
