General Summary:

This position will report to the VP, Global Total Rewards to develop strategy and direction for the compensation and recognition programs across the Enterprise. This position will ensure that our multi-year compensation and recognition roadmap delivers competitive, compliant, innovative and cost-effective structures, programs, and tools that align with Unum’s overall Total Rewards strategy and larger enterprise goals. This position will provide strong thought leadership and manage effective relationships both within Total Rewards and across client and partner groups (HRBPs, Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, Finance, Legal, Service Delivery, etc.) to influence initiatives and outcomes that meet business needs and position Unum Group as an employer of choice. This position will lead the staff responsible for developing tactical plans and executing these strategies.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set and drive Unum Group’s compensation and recognition philosophy, strategy and infrastructure, including the evolution or creation of compensation programs that align with and amplify Enterprise goals, workforce management strategy, employee experience and talent management goals and regulatory compliance.
  • Leverage complex analytics, predictive modeling, and understanding of Unum’s core operations and business strategy to influence adoption of compensation programs and initiatives.
  • Apply strong business acumen, creativity and a focus on best-in-class employee experience to refine technical compensation concepts into effective talent and workforce management strategies
  • Oversee the transformation and ongoing maintenance of Unum Group’s career framework and compensation structure.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to P&C partners and business leaders on all aspects of compensation philosophy, program development and decision making.
  • Design and oversee Unum Group’s regular compensation administration cycles, ensuring that outcomes are equitable, competitive and reinforce a pay-for-performance philosophy.
  • Oversee projects such as survey participation, compensation administration, M&A work, and compliance with new or changing regulations.
  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of compensation professionals, fostering high performance and a collaborative culture focused on delivering exceptional value to employees and Unum.
  • Develop and enhance leader and employee communication, training and processes associated with compensation programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Manage and direct the work of external vendors and consultants on projects and other initiatives.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Certified Compensation Professional desirable.
  • 10 years or more of business experience with progressive increases in management responsibilities.
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct experience in managing and implementing compensation programs for large employers, or significant experience as a broad HR generalist in a large company, with duties including management of compensation programs.
