Job Summary
Under supervision, this position provides an opportunity for appropriately qualified registered nurses to deliver care to neonates and their families. The intern is typically a registered nurse who is concurrently completing graduate education necessary to become an NNP. This role allows the intern to deliver care within a supervised learning environment. The NNP intern position encompasses elements of the traditional nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist and educator roles to meet the specialized educational needs of the NNP trainee, emphasizing transition to the NNP role. The intern will be involved in clinical, education, quality improvement and research activities as deemed appropriate. The intern will be introduced to the role of the NNP including interdisciplinary collaboration and consultation to ensure quality patient care; participating in planning and achieving unit and departmental goals; and providing comprehensive medical management to neonates and their families under clinical supervision.

Essential Functions

• Assesses, plans and evaluates nursing and medical care of a neonatal caseload under the supervision of an experienced practitioner or Neonatologist.
• Performs history taking, physical examination and assessment of initial and ongoing needs of the neonate and family. Orders and interprets laboratory, radiographic, and other diagnostic testing under direct supervision. Performs diagnostic and stabilization procedures as necessary.
• Formulates differential diagnosis and develops a medical plan of care that is comprehensive and inclusive of all members of the health care team. Ensures the plan of care is implemented and evaluates the effectiveness of the plan. Adapts to optimize outcomes.
• Shares responsibility with the NNP and attending physician for communicating pertinent patient information, such as status, prognosis, and problems with the patient’s family and other health care providers
• Attends high-risk deliveries with NNP.
• Writes or dictates daily progress notes, procedure and update notes, transfer/discharge summaries and NNP sign out using appropriate, professional language under the supervision of the NNP and Neonatologist.
• Provides clear, concise and accurate documentation in the medical record. Participates in ordering medications, laboratory, other diagnostic testing and medical treatments through discussion and observation.

 

Education

• Bachelor's Degree Nursing required

 

Experience

• 2+ years NICU/NPCU nursing experience required

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must be enrolled in a Master of Science in Nursing graduate program with a focus on neonatology.
• Must have successfully completed the first NNP clinical experience in the program of choice.
• Requires independent judgment to develop, implement and monitor nursing care practices in area of expertise in order to ensure quality care and cost effective service.
• A high level of analytical ability to resolve complex patient care problems, administrative problems and research issues.
• Interpersonal skills which frequently involve collaborating with peers, supervisors, physicians, administrators and other leaders within the health care system and community.

 

Licenses and Certifications

• License RN-Registered Nurse (30) - State of Wisconsin required

Patient Care Responsibility

• Provides care appropriate to patient population and as described in applicable policies and procedures.
