Job Title: Hardware Test Engineer – Embedded Systems Role Overview

As a Hardware Test Engineer with test automation expertise, you will play a critical role in validating and qualifying embedded system products throughout the product lifecycle. You will design and execute comprehensive test strategies, analyze test data, and clearly document results to support new product development, reliability and quality improvements, regulatory compliance, and cost-reduction initiatives.

You will work closely with design engineering, firmware/software teams, and project management to ensure robust, reliable, and compliant products for utility and industrial applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, execute, and document formal test plans, procedures, and reports for embedded hardware and systems.
  • Develop and maintain automated test solutions to improve test coverage, repeatability, and efficiency.
  • Perform electrical, firmware/software, mechanical, environmental, and system-level testing.
  • Set up and operate laboratory and environmental test equipment, including:
    • Oscilloscopes, DMMs, function/signal generators
    • Temperature and environmental chambers
    • Low-voltage analog and digital measurement equipment
  • Design, build, and qualify test fixtures and test setups during development and validation phases.
  • Lead Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations; track issues and corrective actions using defect tracking systems such as JIRA.
  • Verify that all products meet defined acceptance criteria and product specifications.
  • Analyze test failures, identify root causes, and propose alternative solutions or workarounds.
  • Coordinate regulatory and compliance testing with third-party laboratories (UL, CSA, TÜV, etc.).
  • Ensure all test activities, results, and known issues are fully documented and compliant with internal quality and development processes.
  • Provide clear, actionable feedback to design teams to drive continuous improvement and product robustness.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong experience in hardware and embedded system testing, including interaction with firmware and software.
  • Proven experience with test automation, including scripting languages such as Python (or equivalent).
  • Hands-on experience designing and qualifying test fixtures and automated test setups.
  • Proficiency with test instrumentation, including:
    • Temperature, flow, and pressure sensors
    • Low-voltage analog and digital systems
    • Oscilloscopes, signal/function generators, and environmental test equipment
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of transformer and asset monitoring systems, including temperature, flow, pressure, and condition monitoring.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.
  • Background in product development for utility, energy, or industrial customers.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype development and bring-up.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and compliance standards for industrial/utility products.
