ROLE of the POSITION
Reporting to the Executive Director of Undergraduate Advising, the Director position exists to direct and lead the Division of Health Sciences Advising Center, working with the following schools: Integrated Health, Nursing and Public Health. The Director is responsible for leading and overseeing the delivery of academic advising services and student success strategies and initiatives to help increase retention, progression and completion rates for the health sciences schools. The Director is responsible for the administrative, advisory, and supervisory duties necessary for the day-to-day operations of the advising center. Director duties include but are not limited to advising undergraduate continuing and prospective students, maintaining student records, confirming degree requirements, involvement with curriculum and course related activities, and providing leadership in the implementation of campus advising policies and practices. The Director is responsible for directing and managing the operations of the Advising Center: set unit policies, supervise and train advising professionals and the Advising Center’s staff, maintain advising center budgets, and represent the advising center at appropriate UNLV events. The Director will advocate and represent the unique needs of students in the schools of Integrated Health Sciences, Nursing and Public Health, in addition to the academic advising center at university level meetings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- This position requires a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and 5 years of professional work experience in a field related to academic advising or direct student services + supervisory experience, plus 1-3 years Supervisory experience, and 1-3 years of Management experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
5-7 years of professional work experience in an academic advising leadership position with five years of supervisory experience; 3-5 years Supervisory experience; 3-5 years of Management experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Have knowledge of standards and best practices in advising on the UNLV campus and as dictated by nationally recognized professional organizations such as the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). The Director is also responsible for creating and overseeing strategic programs to help increase the retention, progression, and completion (RPC) rates of the college and university. The Director must also have the ability to use various software applications so as to perform the Director’s duties effectively and efficiently (PeopleSoft, MyUNLV, Rebel Success Hub preferred). It is essential that this person has knowledge of student confidentiality guidelines (FERPA) and a high regard for ethics.
- To achieve excellence in their work, understanding of all three components of the NACADA Academic Advising Core Competencies (Conceptual, Informational, and Relational components), and the ability to synthesize and apply them as needed in advising interactions is required.
- Have knowledge of leadership philosophies and approaches to lead effectively.
- The Director must have effective interpersonal skills including but not limited to the ability to communicate and coordinate with and take direction from university administration, college leadership and chairs of the program for which the Advising Center provides support.
